Sydney is set for a touch of Broadway this week as Doctor Zhivago begins previews tomorrow.

There is a genuine buzz of excitement around this opening given that the production is a world premiere. The vast majority of shows that open in Australia have already played in New York and/or London. Melbourne has had a touch of excitement recently with the all new staging of Hairspray and the upcoming brand new production of Love Never Dies. Even with their fabulous makeovers, however, these are still shows that have been already seen overseas and many fans know them through their cast recordings.
The opening night audience of Doctor Zhivago will experience the thrill usually reserved for overseas theatregoers when they hear an all-new score and see an all-new show. Doctor Zhivago begins performances this week at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, on Friday 11 February, ahead of the Gala Premiere on Saturday 19 February.
Producer John Frost is thrilled with the way the show is shaping up.  "Doctor Zhivago is truly wonderful, a landmark show for 2011.  Australian audiences are in for an emotional journey. On stage we have an extraordinary cast of both rising young stars and theatre greats led by Anthony Warlow, and behind the scenes we have the best of Australian and US creative talent, led by director Des McAnuff and composer Lucy Simon (pictured above with Warlow and Mauder),” Frost said. “Boris Pasternak’s novel has been brought to the stage with great care, with love and passion, and with incredible expertise. I am very proud of Doctor Zhivago.”
No stranger to Australia, Broadway director McAnuff came out to Melbourne in 2009 to put the finishing touches on the Australian production of his world-wide monster hit Jersey Boys. McAnuff promises audiences a “visually astonishing production; I think it is quite magical. One of the most important things in staging this novel is to protect the intimacy of the love story and the love triangle between Zhivago and Tonia and Lara and we have done that.”
In 1995, Australian audiences swooned to Lucy Simon’s sumptuous score for The Secret Garden. Also starring Warlow, alongside Marina Prior and Philip Quast, the quality of the music for The Secret Garden heightens the anticipation for Doctor Zhivago.
Following this premiere season at the Lyric Theatre, Star City, Doctor Zhivago plays at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne from April 9.
