In an international coup, Melbourne is to host the World Premiere of the brand new arena spectacular How To Train Your Dragon.
Dreamworks Theatricals will team with Global Creatures as co-producers of this massive event. Dreamworks Animation made the hit 2010 film How To Train Your Dragon, which gave Global Creatures, producers of Walking With Dinosaurs, the next story they were seeking for the world arena. How To Train Your Dragon had global box office takings of around $500 million and was one of the best reviewed movies of 2010.
Sonny Tilders (below) of The Creature Technology Company introduced the project today in their headquarters in West Melbourne.
Dreamworks Executive Producer Tim Johnson (below) spoke of the delight he has in working with The Creature Technology Company in Australia.
The project will directed and adapted for the stage by Nigel Jamieson (below), who described the backdrop of 60m as being double the width of an IMAX screen. He also spoke of holding auditions in major cities across the world in preparation for rehearsals, which will begin in Melbourne in late November. The interaction of human actors with creatures, not to mention the elements of flying and fire, will differentiate the spectacular production from Walking With Dinosaurs.
Assembled guests and media were treated to a glimpse of a couple of characters from the project. There will be 24 dragons in total, representing 10 species.
First up was a squat, short dragon wrestling with a Viking.
This was followed by a visit from a far more majestic and ominous fire-breathing creature.
How To Train Your Dragon will premiere in at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne in March 2012 before travelling to Sydney and Brisbane.
