Side Show Australia – Opening Night
Last week, Side Show opened at the Hayes Theatre, Potts Point. Side Show tells the story of English siamese twins Daisy and Violet Hilton. The show is based on their life story and how they overcame their fear and challenges to become the highest paid vaudeville stars of the 1930s.
The twins, portrayed by Kerrie Anne Greenland and Laura Bunting are supported by a strong cast, including triple threats Gabriel Brown (Buddy) and Daniel Belle (Terry). The show is directed by Richard Carroll and choreographed by Amy Campbell (whose choreography includes a lift of the twins and a short but beautiful silks routine by Bree Langridge). The set design (by Lauren Peters) is very accurate down to the use of the canvas side show tent (plastic tents weren’t used until the late 70s/ early 80s) and the costuming by Angela White, which in it’s minutest of spectacular detail tells it’s own story.
Although set in the 1930s, the many taboo subjects that the show raises; such as people’s perspective of those with disabilities, homosexuality (which until 1974 was classed as a mental illness in the USA) and being of colour are in many ways still taboo subjects today.
The show runs until October 16th. For tickets go to http://www.hayestheatre.com.au/coming-soon/side-show.html
