NSW Premiere of Ned Kelly musical

December 2018 will see the NSW Premiere of Ned: A New Australian Musical at Newtown’s New Theatre from the 18th- 22nd.

Set in rural Victoria in the late 1800s, it charts Ned Kelly’s transformation from a local hero into a cold-blooded criminal. When his mother, Ellen Kelly, is unjustly convicted of attempting to murder a policeman, Ned, his brother Dan, and their two friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart flee into the bush to avoid their own arrests by the corrupt police force. They are soon outlawed and vilified as the feared ‘Kelly Gang’, and are to be caught at any cost – dead or alive. But swearing that their “orders must be obeyed”, the gang takes their final, and ultimately fatal, stand against the police.

Ned features the talents of Josh McElroy (ATYP’s Spring Awakening, Performing Line’s A Town Named Warboy) who takes on the iconic role of  Ned Kelly, with Jodie Harris (Disney & Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, Opera Australia’s My Fair Lady) by his side as the strong, Kelly family matriarch, Ellen. The incredible Marcus Rivera (Cameron Mackintosh’s Miss Saigon, Opera Australia’s The King and I) tackles the complexity of early Australian law and order through his portrayal of Superintendent Hare.

These three powerhouses are joined by a stellar cast of some of Australia’s finest musical theatre performers including: Cypriana SinghSiobhan Clifford and Rowan Brunt (as Maggie, Kate and Dan Kelly). Guy WebsterLincoln Elliott and Martin Everett (as Joe Byrne, Aaron Sherritt and Steve Hart). David HovCourtney PowellJacqui Greenfield & Rob Hartley (as Alexander Fitzpatrick, Ann Jones, Mrs. Kennedy and Kennedy).
