Pinchgut Opera wins International Award

Australia’s Pinchgut Opera has won the International Opera Award for Best Rediscovered Work, for their 2018 production of Hasse’s Artaserse.

The company’s Artistic Director Erin Helyard accepted the award with CEO Sarah Gilchrist in London on 29 April. The ceremony included a performance from the winning opera with star mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux and the Orpheus Sinfonia, conducted by Helyard.

Helyard said, “Pinchgut has made it its mission for the last 17 years to bring neglected masterworks to life, so to be honoured this way on the international stage is an exceptional achievement. My love and congratulations to all who made this production a success!”

Pinchgut’s was the first ever production of Artaserse in Australia, and starred four-time Grammy Award-nominated Genaux, alongside Australian counter-tenor David Hansen in the role that made Farinelli famous.

Congratulations team!

King Kong awarded a special Tony Award

The Tony Awards have announced that the creature designers behind King Kong will be honoured with a special Tony Award for their outstanding contributions to the theatre.

Particularly gratifying was the Special Tony Award announcement, to be presented to the man behind the monkey, Melbourne animatronics artist Sonny Tilders and his Creature Technology Company.

“No one has ever done work on that scale of bespoke puppetry, it’s puppetry, it’s unique in the world,” says Carmen Pavlovic. “So it’s especially lovely for that to be recognised.”

Australian Peter England was nominated for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for King Kong.

Congratulation to Pavlovic and team!
