AROUND AUSTRALIAN THEATRES

Sydney’s Theatre Royal to re-open

This week saw the fantastic news regarding theatre in Sydney with the announcement that the Theatre Royal will re-open after being closed for the last three years.

Since late last year, MEAA and Live Performance Australia have been putting the pressure on the Theatre Royal’s owners Dexus and the NSW Government to get the theatre back up and running.

In November last year, MEAA President Chloe Dallimore joined Evelyn Richardson of Live Performance Australia and a group of MEAA and LPA members to  present a petition signed by nearly 10,000 people. The delivery of the petition and the campaign received widespread media coverage.

This week saw Dexus  enter into a conditional agreement for a 45-year lease with the NSW government to refurbish and run the theatre.

Congratulations to everyone involved and we can’t wait to enjoy the boost to the enjoyment of theatre in Sydney.

Show Announcement – Bring it On to come to Australia

This week saw the announcement of the return to Melbourne and professional Sydney premiere of BRING IT ON.

Show Announcement – The Dismissal: A New Australian Musical

Before Rudd, Gillard, Rudd, Abbott and Turnbull there was Gough Whitlam. This is history. Everything you will see in this play actually happened exactly the way we present it … including the singing and the dancing.

1975: In an unprecedented move, the unelected Governor General and representative of the Queen, Sir John Kerr, sacked the democratically elected Labor government and installed leader of the opposition Liberal party Malcolm Fraser as Prime Minister, thus turning Down Under upside down.

Award-winning music theatre powerhouse Squabbalogic returns from the wilderness, bringing the dark intrigue, larrikin humour and larger than life characters of The Dismissal to the stage in this vibrant, exuberant and rage-filled new Australian musical.

This Pre-World Premiere production written by Blake Erickson (Cry- Baby, High Fidelity) , Jay James- Moody (She Loves Me, The Book of Mormon) and Laura Murphy (Into the Woods, Muriel’s Wedding) provides a glimpse inside the creative process and invites the audience to participate in shaping the future of a new work. Don’t miss this limited work-in-progress event presentation as we develop, refine and redraft a new theatrical work before your eyes.

The show runs at Sydney’s Seymour Centre from June 18th to 22nd with tickets available from https://www.seymourcentre.com/events/event/the-dismissal/

Cast Announcement – Sunday in the Park with George

Following a sell-out season of A Little Night Music in 2018, celebrated Sondheim repertory company, Watch This, is thrilled to return in 2019 with Sunday in the Park with George.

In Paris, 1884, George Seurat strives to transform the way we see. While he sketches in a park, preoccupied with composition, balance, light and harmony, his subjects are busy wrestling with life in a changing world – in particular, his muse and mistress, Dot, who feels both alive and invisible within his gaze. A century on, another visual artist – also named George – faces a similar dilemma as he attempts to forge a new direction amidst the pressure of high-end commissions and the merciless glare of New York critics.

Joining previously announced Nick Simpson-Deeks (George), Vidya Makan (Dot) and Jackie Rees (George’s Mother) in the cast is Anton Berezin, Grace Browne, Anthony Craig, Josh Direen, Courtney Glass, Lauren Goetz, Winston Hillyer, Georgina Hopson, Sarah Krndija, Angela Lumicisi, Jordon Mahar, Greta Wilkinson and Raphael Wong.

The show runs at Melbourne’s Southbank Theatre from August 21st- 24th with tickets available from https://www.mtc.com.au/plays-and-tickets/other-companies/sunday-in-the-park-with-george/

Opening Night – Muriel’s Wedding

Helpmann Award winning Australian musical, Muriel’s Wedding opened at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday, March 24th.

“Starting its story in the technicolour sunshine of Gold Coast archetype, Porpoise Spit, from the outset this production, just like its source material, doesn’t hold back from making use of classic Aussie idioms and taking the mickey out of them at the same time. Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall have worked out quickly the importance of catchy, first-listen memorability in both their lyrics and melodies. The entire score is full of instantly hummable tunes and/or decidedly lyrical numbers that drive the narrative forward, while interweaving with ABBA’s songs seamlessly.”

The full review can be found at https://www.theatrepeople.com.au/muriels-wedding-melbourne-review/#

Muriel’s Wedding runs in Melbourne until June 9th before moving to Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in late June. Tickets and further details can be found at https://murielsweddingthemusical.com
