Show Announcement: Shrek

On Sunday, June 16th Australia’s leading theatre producer John Frost announced that the Broadway smash hit Shrek is coming to Australia. This fun multi-million dollar musical will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, The Star in early January 2020, followed by seasons at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne and the Lyric Theatre, Brisbane.

Cast Announcement: The Beautiful Game

The Beautiful Game tells the haunting story of life and love during the turmoil of living in 1960s and 1970s Northern Ireland.

The opportunity to play the Beautiful Game (football or soccer) is overshadowed by the gradual worsening of the Catholic and Protestant conflict. This sentiment is echoed by the song ‘Let Us Love in Peace’.

It is Australia’s turn to see this heart breaking love story come to life on stage as the show opens on September 13th at Melbourne’s Chapel off Chapel. Leading the cast is Stephen Mahy (Mamma Mia!, Grease) as John and Stephanie Wall (The Wizard of Oz).

Cast Announcement: Thoroughly Modern Millie

In thoroughly exciting news, Tuesday June 25th saw the announcement of the full cast of The Production Company’s season of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Joining Annie Aitken who is portraying Millie Dillmount are Marina Prior as Mrs Meers, Claire Lyon as Miss Dorothy Brown, Queenie Van De Zandt as Muzzy Van Hossmere, Adam Jon Fiorentino as Trevor Graydon, Nigel Huckle as Jimmy Smith, Keith Brockett as Ching Ho, Jonathan Chan as Bun Foo and Angela Scundi as Miss Flannery.

The ensemble members are Mia Dabkowski-Chandler, Sage Douglas, Mackenzie Dunn, Kala Gare, Chloe Honing, Suzanne Steele, Angelina Thomson, Luke Alleva, Nadia Coote, Emily Corkeron, Andrew Coshan, Josh Gates, Rubin Matters, Susie Melloy, Matthew Prime, Robbie Smith, Rhys Velasquez and Romy Vuksan.

Cast Announcement: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Thursday, June 20th saw the announcement of the five boys who will portray golden ticket holder, Charlie Bucket during the Melbourne season of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The five boys are Benjamin Belsey (Professional Debut), Elijah Slavinskis (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Kinky Boots), Edgar Stirling (Professional Debut), Lenny Thomas (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, The Boy From Oz) and Lachlan Young (Kinky Boots, Dream Lover).

Cast Announcement: Bring It On

Following an extended premiere season and three Green Room Award nominations, including Best Production of a Musical, the spectacular stage show inspired by the cult classic movie of the same name, returns for an explosive national tour with a cast of 28 triple-threat actor-singer-dancers and high-flying cheerleading champions.

Campbell, cheer-leading royalty and squad captain at Truman High School will be played by Kirby Burgess who recently appeared as The Ringmaster in Barnum and Baby in Dirty Dancing. Set to star alongside Kirby is newcomer Jasmine Smith, in the role of headstrong and hardworking Danielle, the dance crew leader at neighbouring Jackson High School. 

Other new cast members performing principal roles include Dayton Tavares (Billy Elliot, In The Heights, West Side Story) as Twig, Coby Njoroge (Carmen, Saturday Night Fever) as Cameron, Baylie Carson (Hello, Dolly!, Dusty) as Bridget and Sebastian Johnston as Steven.

Reprising their principal roles in the sell-out Australian premiere is Karla Tonkich (Brigadoon, Legally Blonde, We Will Rock You, Grease) as Eva, Thomas McGuane (Jersey Boys, The Drowsy Chaperone) as Randall, Hollie James (Rocky Horror Show, My Fair Lady) as Kylar, Emily Thompson (Little Shop of Horrors, Urinetown) as Skylar, Samantha Bruzzese (The Bodyguard, In The Heights) as Nautica and Marty Alix (In the Heights) in the hilarious role of La Cienega.

The ensemble cast includes Jayden Wall, Luca Dinardo, Annie Chiswell, Ben Scarmozzino, Braide Mullane, Celina Yuen, Daniel Ham, Maxine Champion, Jordan Turner, Sena Fujiwara, Leigh Sleightholme and Ned Zaina.

Explosive choreography and electrifying aerial stunts will be performed by world class cheerleading champions Ossie Mclean who originally hails from Perth, Daniel Buyeske, Katherine Abela and Caitlyn Hammond.

Former Neighbour’s star and musical theatre performer Jason Donovan will portray slick lawyer Billy Flynn for the Melbourne season of hit musical, Chicago. Donovan returns to the West End Stage as Pharoah in the London Palladium production of Joseph the Musical from June 27th.

Nominations announced for 2019 Helpmann Awards

Congratulations to the 2019 Helpmann Award nominees in the Musical Theatre categories. Nominated for the top award of Best Musical are In The Heights, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Barbara and the Camp Dogs and West Side Story. 

The 42 awards (across all categories) will be presented on July 14th and 15th at the Arts Centre, Melbourne.

Opening Night: Razorhurst

Congratulations to the company of Razorhurst which opened at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre on Tuesday, June 18th.

The Australian Premiere tells the story of Tilly Devine (Amelia Cormack) and Kate Leigh (Debora Krizak) who together haunt the brothels and sly grog dens they used to rule in Sydney’s Surry Hills early to mid last century.

They reminisce about dodging the cops, violent partners and the razor gangs skulking in the shadows.

Congratulations to Aussie performers Rowena (American Idiot) and Joel (The Boy From Oz) Rasmussen on the announcement of their baby due mid December. This will be their second child.
