WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND AUSTRALIAN THEATRES?
On Monday, July 24th the 2017 Helpmann Awards were held on the set of Kinky Boots at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney.
The evening was opened by the cast of Kinky Boots and included performances from Aladdin, American Idiot, Beautiful, The Book of Mormon and My Fair Lady.
The award for Best Musical went to The Book of Mormon.
The Best Male and Female Actors in a Musical awards went to Callum Francis (Kinky Boots) and Anna O’Byrne (My Fair Lady) respectively.
The Best Male and Female Actors in a Supporting Role in a Musical awards were won by Michael James Scott (Aladdin) and Robyn Nevin (My Fair Lady).
The award for Best Direction of a Musical was won by Trey Parker and Casey Nicholaw for The Book of Mormon, the award for Best Choreography in a Musical went to Jerry Mitchell for Kinky Boots and the award for Best Costume Design was won by Gregg Barnes for Aladdin.

Aladdin to fly into Perth in 2018
July 2018 will see Disney’s Aladdin fly into Perth’s Crown Theatre. Featuring well known songs like ‘A Whole New World’, Aladdin is sure to to be a hit with the whole family.

Jesus Christ Superstar

Sonder – A Charity Concert
Sonder – the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. A night celebrating stories through song with profits going to Beyond Blue.

Moonlite – New Australian Musical
Melbourne based author and playwright, winner of the Sir Peter Ustinov Award for Scriptwriting, and Theatre People writer, Gabriel Bergmoser has written a new musical titled Moonlite. The musical is about the Irish born Australian bushranger Andrew George Scott, better known as Captain Moonlite.
The show will debut at the 2018 Midsumma Festival in Melbourne in January.
Twisted Broadway: tickets now on sale
Twisted Broadway is back!
Bigger, better and more twisted then ever; the 2017 edition features a stunning lineup of some of Australia’s most loved television and musical theatre stars, singing songs originally written for the opposite gender.
Twisted Broadway will be held on Monday, October 2nd at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre and will be hosted by Rob Mills (Jesus Christ Superstar, Ghost) It is guaranteed to be a fun night all while raising funds for the Victorian AIDS Council and Oz Showbiz Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS.

Underground Opera: West End to Broadway- In The Reservoir
Underground Opera’s West End to Broadway returns to Brisbane from Friday, August 11th to Sunday, August 20th 2017.
Enjoy an event full of show stopping tunes in Brisbane’s Underground Opera House. The event is held in the 150 year old venue which was once the Spring Hill Reservoir and serviced water to what is now Brisbane City until 1962.

Australian soprano, Emily Langridge (Les Miserables) has been cast in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! for the 2017 BBC Proms. Oklahoma! is set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906 (a year before Oklahoma became the 46th state of the USA) and tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams.
Oklahoma! will be performed at the Royal Albert Hall at 2:00pm (11:00pm, August 11th AEST time) and 7:30pm (4:30am, August 12th AEST time) on Friday, August 11th. For those in London, tickets can be purchased from https://www.royalalberthall.
