Opening Night: Come From Away

On Saturday, July 20th, theatre lovers converged on Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre for the Opening Night of hot musical Come From Away.

Melbourne is the first country in the Southern Hemisphere to play home to this inspiring, real life story and the real life “Come From Aways” and Gander residents were down under to help our company celebrate.

Long story short, Come From Away tells the story of a community following the September 11, 2001 attacks. US airspace was temporarily closed, resulting in the diversion of all flights. In Newfoundland, Canada, the tiny town of Gander and its even smaller airport was thrown into the midst of the ensuing chaos. With a population of just 8,000, Gander not only welcomed, but for 5 days, managed to accommodate, feed and entertain 7,000 displaced passengers and crew from some 38 flights – a feat that nearly doubles their population within a few hours – all during a local bus strike.”
