WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND AUSTRALIAN THEATRES?
Jersey Boys tour announced
The internationally acclaimed hit musical Jersey Boys tells the true-life story of four guys from the wrong side of the tracks, and the rise to stardom of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, one of the most successful bands in pop music history. The band sold more than 175 million records and were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for their worldwide hits, including ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘Walk Like a Man’, ‘Bye Bye Baby’, ‘Sherry’ and ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’, which all feature in the musical.
Jersey Boys will open at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on September 6th, 2018 for a strictly limited season, followed by a season in Brisbane from January 2nd, 2019 and Melbourne from February 23rd, 2019.

Rob Guest Award – applications now open
Applications are now open for the 2018 Rob Guest Endowment Awards. Named after the late Rob Guest, the awards seek out Australia’s brightest and most talented young rising stars through a multistage audition process. Six finalists will be shortlisted and will have the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of an audience of Australia’s leading and most established producers and casting agents at the final event. The winner will take home the highly coveted Rob Guest Endowment Award of $20,000.
Applicants will also have a chance to compete for the Melbourne’s East End Theatre District Artist Development Award. The award is a $5,000 cash prize to assist one of the finalists with further training and development to become a leading artist in their field. Chosen by the 2018 judging panel, this award is fully funded by the Melbourne’s East End Theatre District, an initiative of Mr Mike Walsh and the Marriner family to celebrate the six beautiful heritage theatres located in the cultural heart of the city, namely the Princess Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, the Regent
The Rob Guest Endowment Technical Award in honour of Sue Nattrass is a $5,000 cash prize donated by Foundation Theatres. The award is intended to help a member of a technical department in theatre gain the contacts, tuition and experience needed to help them become a leader in their field. Foundation Theatres is one of Australia’s leading theatre owners and operators, currently managing the Sydney Lyric and Capitol Theatres. It is an Australian family owned company whose owners, Stephen and Angela Found, have a great passion for the industry and those that work within it. Their vision is to facilitate a thriving and profitable commercial performing arts sector across Australia, delivering opportunities for growth, employment and the pursuit of excellence. They hope that this award will help continue to encourage those technicians who make live theatre possible. The winner will be announced during the 2018 final event.
The Rob Guest Endowment Musician Award is a $5,000 cash prize intended to help the recipient become a leader in their field. This award is open to all practitioners working or seeking to work in orchestra pits of musical theatre productions around the country. The winner will be announced during the 2018 final event.
Applicants also compete for The Playbill Future Prospect Award, a $1,500 cash prize, which will be bestowed upon a semi-finalist who didn’t make the finals but is of sufficient interest to the judges to encourage them to return next year.

Erin Clare CD
Talented Australian musical theatre performer Erin Clare (Heathers, High Fidelity) has recorded her debut EP titled Everie – Emotionally Available featuring songs close to Clare’s heart.
Her eclectic musical tastes are expressed through soulful melodies and anthemic EDM drops, with haunting lyrics that connect all facets of her exciting debut five-track EP.

Celine Dion visits Australian musical casts
The casts of Mamma Mia! and Wizard of Oz were surprised when Canadian songstress stopped in to visit this week while in Australia for her tour. Jayde Westaby who plays Tanya in Mamma Mia! (currently in Melbourne) was removing her wig when she came face to face with Dion who complemented her on her performance. The casts enjoyed the visit.
Justin and Deanna Anderson welcome a baby girl
Congratulations to Justin Anderson (WICKED, Wizard of Oz, Evita) and his wife Deanna (WICKED, The Lion King) welcomed the birth of their daughter Adelyn Edith on July 23rd, 2018. Congratulations to you both and welcome to the theatre family Adelyn.
State Theatre: Boy From Oz (August 11th)
Jaime Hadwen (Muriel’s Wedding) will portray Sandy in the Royal Carribean Independence of the Seas production of Grease. Hadwen has been in rehearsals in Miami, Florida and will join the cruise liner soon. Congratulations Jaime!
Monica Swayne (Aladdin, Fiddler on the Roof) is currently appearing as Mrs Stainsly-Asherton in the ensemble of Me and My Girl which is currently playing at Chichester Festival Theatre. The show runs until August 25th, 2018 with tickets available from https://www.cft.org.uk/
