School of Rock – Adult Cast Announcement

The adult cast of School of Rock was announced on July 15th. Leading the charge as Dewey Finn is the previously announced Brent Hill with Joe Kosky (Kinky Boots) as alternate Dewey Finn. Leading the school with an iron fist is Rosalie Mullins who will be played by Amy Lehpamer (Sound of Music), Ned Schneebly will be played by John O’Hara (WICKED), Matt Crowley (Next to Normal)  as Theo/ Ensemble, Bree Langridge (Wicked of Oz) as Swing/ Dance Captain, Michaela Powell (Les Miserables) as Swing/ Assistant Dance Captain and an ensemble including Bianca Baykara (Rocky Horror), James Cutler (The Importance of Being Earnest), Ellis Dolan (Chimerica), Andrew Kroenert (Brigadoon), Alex Hyne (Evita), Jenni Little (Kinky Boots), Zachary Pidd (Vanishing Act), Sophie Weiss (Wizard of Oz) and Stephen Wheat (Dusty).

The Australian premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway and West End smash hit rock musical, School of Rock will play at Her Majesty’s, Melbourne from 31 October 2018.

Extra dates for School of Rock will be released on Monday 16 July.

StageArt have announced cast members of their production of NINE which will play at Chapel off Chapel in Melbourne from October 12th. Portraying Guido Contini is Anthony Scundi. Scundi is the chief of Q44 Theatre Inc and has starred in featured shows such as ‘Ironbound’ as Maks, Eddie in ‘Hurlyburly’, Ian in ‘Shining City’, Tony Aronica in ‘Savage in Limbo’ and as Andrew in ‘Spike Heels’.

StageArt has gathered a stellar creative team to bring this powerful and award winning musical of self-discovery to life. Directed & choreographed by Michael Ralph (Bring It On, West Side Story) one of the countries leading and most sort after creatives, he will be assisted by Sheridan Anderson (The Wizard Of Oz, We Will Rock You) as Assistant Choreographer and Evan Lever (La Cage Aux Folles, Anything Goes) as Assistant Director. Nathan Firmin (The Full Monty, Memphis) is leading the musical department as Musical Director. The role of Guido Contini will be understudied by talented Melbourne actor/singer Robbie Blowers.

NINE tells the story of famed Italian film director Guido Contini who is suffering debilitating writer’s block, while facing a marriage breakdown in the middle of having a mid-life crisis. At the age of 40, Guido must call on the nine closest and most powerful women in his life to put him back on the road to success and happiness.

Spring Awakening – Brisbane

This week saw the announcement of the cast of Underground Broadway’s production of Spring Awakening. Spring Awakening is a rock musical based on the German play of the same name. Set in the late 19th century, the musical tells the story of a group of teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer layers of teenage sexuality.

Wendla Bergmann (Jacqui McLaren) is a confused teen frustrated about her mother’s lack of openess when it comes to telling her what she believes she needs to know as a adolescent. Similarly disgruntled are Martha (Jordan Malone), Thea (Maddison McDonald), Anna (Monique Dawes) and Ilse (Ruby Clark). Meanwhile the young men become frustrated by their school’s narrow minded attitudes as Moritz (Oliver Lacey) misreads a line in the class appointed literature. When Melchior (Harry Aston) trys to stick up for him he is hit by the classroom teacher. Their classmates Ernst (Michael Nunn), Hänschen (Tim Carroll), Otto (Tom Hooley) and Georg (Sammy Sand) share similar thoughts and frustration with him. Rounding out the cast are Elise Grieg and James Shaw.

Helpmann Awards and Performers announced

The star studded lineup of hosts and performers for the 18th Helpmann Awards to be presented in Sydney on July 15th and 16 has been announced. The hosts include e Olivier & Tony Nominee, performer and writer, Tony Sheldon; acclaimed choreographer Raphael Bonachela; the multiple Helpmann Award winning mezzo soprano Jacqueline Dark, Award winning performer and MEAA president Chloe Dallimore and celebrated musical theatre star and TV host David Campbell.

Attendees will be entertained by the cast of Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical performing ‘It’s Raining Men’ and an evocative duet from ab [intra] with electrifying Sydney Dance Company dancers Davide Di Giovanni and Charmene Yap. The stars from the celebrated new Australian musical Muriel’s Wedding,Maggie McKenna and Madeleine Jones, will perform ‘Amazing’ as their characters, Muriel and Rhonda, affirm their new friendship.

The biggest line up of Australia leading female vocalists will bring the show home with songs from the hit musical and film Funny Girl. Divas and funny girls themselves, Michala Banas (Upper Middle Bogan), Natalie Bassingthwaite (The X Factor), Casey Donovan (Australian Idol) Virginia Gay (First Tuesday Book Club), Verity Hunt-Ballard (Mary Poppins), Dami Im (Eurovision), Maggie McKenna (Muriel’s Wedding the Musical), Queenie van der Zandt (2017 Helpmann Awards Host) and Zahra Newman (Book of Mormon) will have the audience standing in their seats and cheering for more.

The Red Carpet will roll outside the Capitol Theatre from 6pm hosted by the diva of dresses and darling of Australian musical theatre, Rhonda Burchmore OAM.

The Helpmann Awards Act II will broadcast live from the Capitol Theatre on ABC on Monday 16 July at 9.30pm. Highlight from the previous night, Act I, will also be part of the broadcast.

Funny Girl

Thursday, July 12th to Saturday July 14th saw Michala Banas, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Casey Donovan, Virginia Gay, Verity Hunt-Ballard, Dami Im, Maggie McKenna, Zahra Newman, Caroline O’Connor, Queenie van de Zandt, Megan Washington and Trevor Ashley take on the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl at the Sydney Opera House.

Each performer brought something different, a part of Fanny and were adored by the audiences. Rounding out an already fabulous cast were Nancye Hayes, Ryan Gonzalez and Valerie Bader.



Billy Elliott auditions

Billy Elliott is the heartwarming and tear provoking story of a young boy who upon observing a ballet class lead by Mrs Wilkinson trades in his boxing gloves for ballet shoes. The story is told against the backdrop of UK miners’ strike.

Priscilla’s David Harris sings Anthem at State of Origin

Congratulations to David Harris (currently portraying Tick in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) on his great performance of the Australian Anthem on Wednesday, July 11th at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Mamma Mia!

Congratulations to fabulous cast of Mamma Mia! on their Melbourne Opening Night which took place on Thursday, July 12th at the Princess Theatre. Donna is played by Melbourne local Natalie O’Donnell who played the role of Sophie (played in this production by Sarah Morrison) in the 2001 production. O’Donnell spoke of this change in a recent interview of this change “It’s been such a gorgeous full circle. When I first got into it, I was excited but also thought, ‘my god, I’ve got to get my head around this, it’s such a gear change’. But I think enough time has gone by. I reminisce on doing the show the last time but it feels like Donna is very much a new role in a new show for me, which is really great,” 

Playing Donna’s besties are Jayde Westaby as Tanya and Alicia Gardner as Rosie, Stephen Mahy as Sophie’s boyfriend Sky and Ian Stenlake, Phillip Lowe and Josef Ber as Sophie’s possible dads.

The cast earned a well deserved standing ovation.

Sleeping Beauty

Congratulations to the company of Bonnie Lythgoe’s panto Sleeping Beauty which opened at Sydney’s State Theatre on Friday, July 13th. The show features Rhonda Burchmore who as the Evil Queen flys above the audience. Other performers include Melissa Tkautz as the Good Fairy, Embla Bishop as Sleeping Beauty, Daniel Milne as The Prince, Kev Orkian as Silly Billy, Frazer Hines as King Louis, Katrina Retallick as The Nanny and Cameron Taylor as the Evil Queen’s equally as evil henchman.

Lion King roars into Singapore

Friday, June 29th saw the opening of Disney’s The Lion King at Singapore’s Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands. The show is being produced by Australian producers The Michael Cassel Group and stars Australian performer André Jewson as Zazu.

Moulin Rouge sparkles in Boston
