Garfield: The Musical

StageArt is excited to announce the Australian premiere of Garfield: The Musical with Cattitude will play at Melbourne’s Chapel off Chapel from April 3rd to 13th, 2018 as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Directed by Luigi Lucente (Muriel’s Wedding, Jesus Christ Superstar) Garfield is based off the much loved Jim Davis comics starring Garfield, the lazy cat with a love of lasagne, snoozing his days away and a hatred of Mondays.

Muriel’s Wedding to return in 2019

Much loved, award winning musical Muriel’s Wedding will return to the Sydney stage after their sell out 2017 season at Roslyn Packer Theatre.

From July, 2019 the big, brash and very cheeky new musical will play at the Lyric Theatre with tickets on sale from February 20th, 2018.

American Idiot – Tour Down Under

American Idiot cast members Phoebe Panaretos, Alex Jeans, Linden Furnell and Maxwell Simon performed the Australian National Anthem and ‘Wake Me Up When September End’ at the final leg of the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide on Sunday, January 21st.

Beau Woodbridge – Australian Open 

The evening of January 26th saw 15 year old performer Beau Woodbridge (Guys and Dolls, The King and I) perform the Australian National Anthem in front of a live audience of thousands ahead of tennis action.

Natalie O’Donnell – Australian Open

Talented musical theatre performer Natalie O’Donnell performed our National Anthem on Rod Laver Arena ahead of the Women’s Final on Saturday, January 28th. O’Donnell is currently playing the role of Donna in the 2017/2018 Australian Tour of Mamma Mia!.

Rob Guest Endowment Awards

Monday, January 22nd saw the finals of the 2017 Rob Guest Endowment Awards held with Georgina Hopson (My Fair Lady) announced as the recipient of the 2017 Rob Guest Endowment Award which is valued at $20,000 to be used for professional development.

Sydney Theatre Awards

The 2017 Sydney Theatre Award winnners were announced during a ceremony at The Seymour Centre. Muriel’s Wedding won seven awards on the evening including Best Mainstage Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (Simon Phillips), Best Choreography (Andrew Hallsworth), Best Musical Direction (Isaac Hayward), Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Madeleine Jones), Best Newcomer (Maggie McKenna) and Best Original Score in a Mainstage Production (Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall).

Other winners in the musical theatre categories were Alicia Clements (Assassins) for Best Stage Design of an Independent Production and Best Costume Design of an Independent Production, Calamity Jane for Best Production of an Independent Musical, Virginia Gay (Calamity Jane) for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, David Campbell (Assassins) for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and Matthew Backer (Only Heaven Knows) for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

Gypsy Cloak

The Gypsy Cloak is a theatre tradition where the most experienced ensemble member from one show passes it to the most experienced ensemble member of the next show.

The wardrobe department will then place a patch on the cloak to represent their show and a ceremony is held to acknowledge the handover of the cloak between the two shows.

Today saw the cloak passed on from the company of Aladdin to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

This week has seen Hayden Tee (Les Miserables) record his album in Budapest, Hungary. The album which is set for release later this year includes songs such as Lily’s Eyes from The Secret Garden and Stars from Les Miserables.

Jessica Condon and Denise Devlin (Kinky Boots) together with Adam Perryman (The Full Monty) and Jordan Angelides (Boys in the Band) are with Norwegian Cruise Lines ship Norwegian Epic while Mark Stefanoff (Kinky Boots) is aboard Princess Cruises.
