2016 Matilda Awards

On Monday, January 20th February the Matilda Awards will be held at The Brisbane Powerhouse. The Matilda awards celebrate the achievements of the Queensland theatre industry. Theatre People will be covering the event.


American Idiot cast announced

This week saw the cast announced for Green Day’s American Idiot. Calamity Jane cast announced

Directed by Richard Carroll (Side Show), Calamity Jane tells the story of American Frontierswoman Martha Jane Canary, better known as Calamity Jane. Starring Virginia Gay (Dusty, High Society) as Calamity Jane the cast also includes Laura Bunting (RENT, Side Show) as Katie Brown, Anthony Gooley (Of Mice and Men, All My Sons), as Wild Bill Hickock, Sheridan Harbridge (Charlie Brown, The Detectives Handbook) as Miss Adelaide Adams and Susan, Rob Johnson (Carrie, The Detectives Handbook) as Francis Fryer, Matthew Pearce (RENT, Rolling Thunder Vietnam) as Lt Danny Gilmartin and Tony Taylor (As You Like It, 39 Steps) as Henry Miller. Paris: A Rock Odyssey

Melbourne’s newest professional theatre company Music Theatre Melbourne presents Paris: A Rock Odyssey. Due to run from July 13th to 15th at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Paris tells one of the world’s great love stories, the love between Paris, Prince of a Troy and Helen, the Greek queen. The show will be performed in tribute to the late Jon English.

Perth Showcase 

Some of Australia’s top theatre performers including Simon Burke (Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music)Jemma Rix (WICKED)Christine Anu (South Pacific) and Lauren McKenna (Heathers) together with Harvest Rain’s Youngharts Network have spent the last week in Perth conducting workshops with the mass ensemble of youth members from the cast of Hairspray. Due to poor ticket sales Harvest Rain had to unfortunately cancel their official tour shows in Perth but decided to put on workshops resulting in a large showcase event.

On Monday, January 16th, New Theatricals Aus together with Hayes Theatre held cold readings of the new drafts for the two new musicals under development as part of the theatre development program.

Matthew Lee Robinson performs song at Festival of New Musicals in the USA

This week saw Australian theatre favourite, Matthew Lee Robinson perform his new song ‘Dear Future Me (Life After Glee)’ at the 12th Annual Festival of New Musicals in Connecticut, USA. Here is Robinson’s new song:



Matt Lee to perform as Bert in the International tour of Mary Poppins

Having performed the role of Bert in the 2010-2012 Australian and New Zealand tour of Mary Poppins before reprising the role for the 2015-2016 UK tour it comes as no surprise that Matt Lee was cast in the role of Bert for the 2017 tour of Zurich, Switzerland and Dubai, UAE which begins in Zurich on February the 1st until March 19th and Dubai from May 1st to 18th.
