Jesus Christ Superstar – Opening Night

Congratulations to the company of The Production Company’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Opening Night was held on Saturday, July 29th at the Melbourne Arts Centre.

Leading the cast as Jesus is Rob Mills (Ghost, Grease) who performs a touching and powerful rendition of songs such as Gethsemane.  The role of Judas is portrayed by Melbourne’s Zoy Frangos (My Fair Lady, Les Miserables) in his Production Company debut.

Mary Magdalene was brought to life by Melbourne based performer Alinta Chidzey (Curtains, CrossXroads) in a gentle, light portrayal.

Samantha Leigh Dodemaide to play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz

On Sunday, July 30th the announcement of The Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy was made. Portraying the famous girl from Kansas will be Samantha Leigh Dodemaide. Dodemaide’s past roles have included the title character in Violet and understudy for the role of Kathy Seldon in the recent Australian tour of Singin’ in the Rain. Dodemaide also won the prestigious Rob Guest Endowment Award in 2013.

Assassins – full cast announcement

Wednesday, August 2nd saw the announcement of the full cast for upcoming season of Assassins which will play at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre from Friday, September 15th until Saturday, October 14th.

Joining the previously announced David Campbell, Hannah Fredericksen, Martin Crewes and Connor Crawford on stage will be Bobby Fox (Jersey Boys)Jason Kos (Cabaret)Justin Smith (The Detective’s Handbook)Kate Cole (Ladies in Black)Rob McDougall (Les Miserables)Laura Bunting (Calamity Jane) and making his professional debut will be recent VCA graduate Maxwell Simon.

Assassins tells the story of the men and women who have attempted to assassinate past presidents of the USA.

Rob Guest Endowment Awards

This week saw the launch of the 2017 Rob Guest Endowment Awards and applications for all awards are now open.

The award provides financial assistance and industry support to the next generation of musical theatre stars, creators and musicians. The 2017 prize package is valued over $50,000.00 including the $20,000.00 major prize, The Rob Guest Endowment Award.

The cause was created following the sudden death of one of Australia’s finest musical theatre performers, Rob Guest OBE, in October 2008. In recognition of his achievements in the musical theatre industry, the Rob Guest Endowment was established in his honour to help emerging young performers in the musical theatre industry.

Previous winners include Linden Furnell (Kinky Boots)Daniel Assetta (The Book of Mormon, CATS) Joshua Robson (My Fair Lady, Dream Lover), and Samantha Leigh Dodemaide (The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain).

Finalists Du Toit Bredenkamp, Hilary Cole, Linden Furnell, Stefanie Jones, Genevieve Kingsford and Matthew Predny perform at the Rob Guest Endowment Gala concert at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney, NSW. The gala concert was hosted by Lucy Durack and Penny McNamee; guest artists performing included pop sensation Paulini, principal cast members from Aladdin, the Helpmann Award winning Molly Barwick, Sasha Rose, Georgia Taplin and Bella Thomas who originated the role of Matilda in Australia, past winners Samantha Dodemaide and Blake Bowden, 2015 Rob Guest Endowment winner Daniel Assetta, and cast members from Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical. The winner of the Rob Guest Endowment Award for 2016 was Linden Furnell. The winner of the East End Theatre District Development Award was Genevieve Kingsford. The Sue Nattrass Technical Award went to Ash Currell; The Young Musician Award, to a drummer, Emma Ford; and the winner of the Playbill Future Prospect award was Kieran McGrath. Saturday, August 4th saw members of the Australian theatre community gather at Tamworth’s Capitol Theatre to raise money for mental health research. Produced by Tamwoth export Rob McDougall (Les Miserables), Epiphanies included performances by Kerrie Anne Greenland (Paris, Les Miserables), Daniel Belle (Side Show, Les Miserables) as well as local singers and performance troupes. Congratulations to all on a great night!


Broadway Unplugged

Broadway Unplugged presents the August edition of their show “Once Upon A Time”. The evening will be held on August 28th at Melbourne’s The Toff in Town on Swanston St from 8pm.

Title of Show – rehearsals

Rehearsals for the Understudy Productions season of Title of show began on Wednesday, August 2nd ahead of their Brisbane season to be held at Hayward Street Studios.

Starring Lauren McKenna (Grease, Heathers)Jackson McGovern (RENT)Alexander Woodward (Grease) and Aurélie Roque (RENT)Title of Show tells the story of Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers who have decided to put everything on the line and create a show for the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

The Bodyguard celebrates their 100th Show

Congratulations to the company of The Bodyguard who celebrated their 100th performance in Brisbane on Wednesday, August 2nd. The Brisbane season of The Bodyguard finishes on August 13th before beginning previews at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on August 24th.

Australian performer Ben Lewis (Love Never Dies) will join the London cast of The Phantom of the Opera which is about to start its 32nd year. Lewis who originated the role of The Phantom in the Australian premiere of the sequel Love Never Dies begins  his performances at Her Majesty’s Theatre on September 4th.

Kellie Gnauck

This week, Australian born performer Kellie Gnauck made her West End debut at London’s Phoenix Theatre in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita. Gnauck is understudy for the role of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron.

Congratulations to the Australian cast members of CATS, currently showing in South Korea. August 4th saw many firsts for Australian cast members including Ashlee Smith (We Will Rock You) making her debut, Smith went on as mischievous cat Rumpleteazer. Amy Berrisford (CATS Australia) went on as Tantomile, Matt Antonucci performed the role of Mr Mistofelees and Taylor Scanlan (CATS Australia) performed the role of Bill Bailey.


Josh Piterman – CD

Congratulations to Australian performer Josh Piterman (Beautiful, CATS) who has recently spent time in Europe recording with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic. Piterman’s CD will be released early next year.


Priscilla celebrates 400 shows

Congratulations to the cast of the Norwegian Epic’s show Priscilla Queen of the Desert on their 400th show. Many Australian’s have been and are involved in this production including John O’Hara (WICKED) and Bianca Baykara (NINE, West Side Story) who also celebrated her own milestone this week of 100 shows.
