WEST SIDE STORY
THE PRODUCTION COMPANY’S 50TH MUSICAL
OPENS THE 2015 SEASON
STATE THEATRE, ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE, JULY 11

Gale Edwards’ new staging of the musical West Side Story opens The Production Company’s 2015 Season on July 11. It will be the Company’s 50th Musical. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set on New York’s Upper West Side in the mid-1950’s where racial and social tensions run high.
Jeanne Pratt, Chairman of the company says West Side Story is, “One of the most loved musicals of all time. It’s the best musical ever written and the ideal show to celebrate our outstanding achievement in producing 50 musicals since 1999.”

Today the company’s Artistic Director, Ken Mackenzie-Forbes said, “West Side Story is one of the most powerful musicals ever created and requires a cast of virtuoso performers. This poignant, provocative and emotionally powerful piece of theatre, originally conceived by Jerome Robbins, will feature a company of thirty-eight artists on stage plus an orchestra of 30 musicians. For this large scale musical we are bringing together some wonderful talent. Our all-Australian cast features exciting, young artists many of whom have also enjoyed outstanding successes on Broadway and London’s West End.”

In the role of Maria will be Anna O’Byrne, a Melbourne artist working in London. Anna’s recent roles include the starring role of Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera on London’s West End. This exciting singer returns to Melbourne specifically to star in West Side Story.

Gareth Keegan, who has had outstanding success as Gaylord Ravenal in Show Boat and as Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance for The Production Company, performs the role of Tony.

Deone Zanotto will perform Anita. Her international credits include A Chorus Line on Broadway and We Will Rock You on London’s West End.

Adam Fiorentino whose US credits include Bert in Mary Poppins on Broadway and TV’s hit show 30ROCK, will perform the role of Bernardo.

Sean Mulligan is Riff. Sean’s recent West End engagements have been Jersey Boys and Legally Blonde. He has also been a regular on BBCTV in EastEnders and The Persuasionists.

Now a favourite at The Production Company, Gale Edwards, whose production of Chess won seven Green Room Awards, returns to direct this new production. This internationally acclaimed Emmy Award winning stage director recently directed Aida on Sydney Harbour.

Guy Simpson, who seldom misses a year with The Production Company, returns to be musical director. Since 1990, Guy has been the world wide Musical Director of The Phantom of the Opera and has just opened a production in Istanbul!

This season of West Side Story will feature the original Jerome Robbins Choreography recreated by the exciting young Melbourne choreographer, Michael Ralph. The design team comprises Academy Award winner and Tony Award winner – Tim Chappel (Costumes), Shaun Gurton (Set) and Trudy Dalgleish (Lighting).

Orchestra Victoria will be playing for all performances and the leader of Orchestra Victoria for this season is Jo Beaumont. Jo has previously played for West Side Story in a season at La Scala, Milan where the conductor was Leonard Bernstein.
