Home Grown celebrates its 5th anniversary on Sunday with a concert celebration at Melbourne’s Chapel off Chapel. We asked founders of Home Grown, Nick Hedger and Ben Nicholson, to compile their Top 10 Home Grown Highlights from the past five years and here they are … all ELEVEN of them!
1. Kansley & Lidert Songbook Highlights Reel – 2019
Music & Lyrics by Kurt Kansley & Oliver Lidert
Kurt Kansley and Oliver Lidert have BURST onto the music theatre writing scene and made their mark loud and clear at their Songbook Series concert earlier this year. They have some of the freshest, smoothest and exciting pieces of work, we couldn’t wait to help them show off their material! Kurt had been working on Evita, so we were very excited to have some of his amazing cast mates along with other brilliant humans to share these new songs!h
2. ‘Edge of Us’ – Cassie McIvor – 2018
Music & Lyrics by Katie Weston
Katie Weston is Australian musical theatre’s answer to Alanis Morrisette; and we bloody love it. What a ripper of a song, performed by the incomparable Cassie McIvor who shook the audience (and our host) that night. And that Cello gah! Heaven.
3. ‘Some Perspective’ – Vidya Makan – 2018
Music & Lyrics by Vidya Makan
Vidya as a writer (she is also a stunning performer as you can see in this clip) came onto the scene through Home Grown’s Grassroots Initiative with her musical Woman. The panel instantly knew this was a fresh sound with a voice that had something to say. We couldn’t wait for her to start sharing her work; and then last year Vidya gave the world this.
4. ‘No One Will Bruise’ – Patrice Tipoki – 2014
Music & Lyrics by Matthew Lee Robinson
This was at our first concert at Chapel Off Chapel back when we were in the foyer for every show. From Atlantis, this was only the second time it had been sung in a public concert setting, and to have Patrice Tipoki singing a gorgeous Matthew Lee Robinson song in Home Grown’s first year, was something very special and very exciting.
5. ‘I Honestly Love You’ – Todd McKenney – 2015
Music & Lyrics by Peter Allen
This was at Home Grown’s 2nd Birthday concert! It was so cool to have Todd McKenney singing a song from Boy From Oz and sharing a little bit of Australian Musical Theatre history along the way, accompanied by the divine Michael Tyack who also worked on the original Boy From Oz production.
6. ‘Beautiful’ – Amity Dry – 2016
Music & Lyrics by Amity Dry
Amity Dry, well known for her her 2003 hit single ‘The Lighthouse’ and her time on reality TV show The Block, Amity gave us a rare insight to the truth behind the ”reality” with this stunning song from her musical Famous. Amity was also one of the first recipients of The Grassroots Initiative in 2016 with her musical Famous.
7. ‘The Ballad Of Eulalia Horne (She Rose Above It)’ – Kerrie Anne Greenland with Andrew Kroenert & Baylie Carson – 2016
by Nick Enright and Alan John
When we started the Songbook Series we knew we wanted to do the most prolific and respected Australian music theatre writer, Nick Enright. Not only because he has so many great works with so many great but because there were so few accessible recordings of some of his best songs! There were so many stupidly talented humans on the night, but here is one of our favourite songs of his by a few of our favourite performers; The Ballad Of ‘Eulalia Horne (She Rose Above It)’ from Orlando Rourke.
8. ‘Murphy’s Law’ – Sophie Stokes – 2017
Music and Lyrics by Nick Hedger & Ben Nicholson
Home Grown has had two interstate concerts, both in Adelaide, one was a part of the Adelaide Fridge Festival. Adelaide has a strong history of new works being developed in large part thanks to Nick Enright’s working with State Theatre Company. This is from a performance in 2017 at the Jade, in Adelaide’s CBD, performed by Adelaide’s own Sophie Stokes
9. Bryant & Frank Songbook Highlights Reel – 2017
All Music & Lyrics by Mathew Frank & Dean Bryant
Another obvious choice for Home Grown’s Songbook Series was Mat and Dean’s catalogue of work. And there were so many special moments, we couldn’t just pick one … so we cheated and chose the highlights reel from the night.
10. ‘Wearing Thin’ – Lucy Maunder – 2018
Music & Lyrics by Nick Gentile & Lincoln Hall
Lucy Maunder is absolutely divine performing this hauntingly beautiful song from Nick and Lincoln’s musical Together Apart. We just love it.
11. ‘What The Devil’ – Noni McCallum – 2018
Lyrics by James Millar Music by Peter Rutherford
James and Pete wrote this song for their musical adaptation of The Dressmaker while they were Artists in Residence at Monash Uni as part of the incredible Jeanne Pratt Foundation to support new Australian made work. Home Grown favourite Noni McCallum blew this one to hell and back at Home Grown’s 4th Birthday.
Home Grown’s 5th Anniversary Celebration is happening at Chapel Off Chapel on Sunday 26th May at 7pm.
