Tim Minchin has been cast as Judas Iscariot in a revival of Jesus Christ Superstar at London’s 02 Arena later this year.  Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger has been cast as Mary Magdalene.  The role of Jesus will be cast in the next installment of Lloyd Webber’s latest reality casting show, Superstar.

Minchin, the co-composer of current West End mega-hit Matilda; just earned the Olivier Award for Best Musical together with six other awards for Best Set, Best Choreographer, Best Sound, Best Director and of course, who could go past the delightful Matilda’s themselves taking home the coveted Best Actress award.  His Australian stage credits include productions of Amadeus, Hamlet, The Return, Twelfth Night, Man of La Mancha. This is not his first tangle with Superstar, having understudied the role of Judas for two previous productions of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Most recently, Superstar is rumoured to have caused a rift between Lloyd Webber and his collaborator Rice, who called the endeavour ‘tacky.’  The show held auditions in February and March of 2012, and will air in the UK later this year.

The current Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar has picked up a number of nominations for the 2012 Tony Awards.
