In the famous words of Glinda, ‘It’s good to see me, isn’t it?’, here we are. I can’t believe we are already in November! Hanukkah commences in 4 weeks and we are only 7.5 weeks from Christmas. In October, a little known musical called WICKED celebrated its 18th year on Broadway and The Phantom of the Opera celebrated 35 years on London’s West End. Both these shows have enjoyed sell-out audiences in Australia.
I would like to dedicate this week’s column to two talented wizards of the Australian stage who have passed away in the last few months. Both were loveable, larger than life larrikins who the Australian theatre community will miss greatly. Theatre People send condolences to Glen and Bert’s families, friends, and colleagues.
In WICKED Glen Hogstom portrayed Dr Dillamond and The Wizard. For the Asian tour of the show, he was the Staging Director. Glen was in the very first musical I saw, CATS and many others after including My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof.
We all have fond memories of Bert whether it be from In Melbourne Tonight, Good Morning Australia or from his days of treading the boards of Australian theatres. The first time I saw Bert perform was in the Brisbane season of The Wizard of Oz in 2002. However you remember him, I am sure that like my memories, it brings a smile to your face.
