Monday, February 8th saw the cast announced for the National Tour of CHESS.

Natalie Bassingthwaighte (Chicago, Grease) will portray Hungarian born chess player, Florence Vassy, presumed lover of Freddie Trumper (The American), portrayed on stage in this production by Mark Furze (Home and Away). Joining them on stage are Alexander Lewis (West Side Story, Ragtime) as Anatoly Sergievsky (The Russian), Eddie Muliaumaseali’i  (Show Boat) will portray Alexander Molokov, Sergievsky’s second. Paulini (The Bodyguard, Saturday Night Fever) appears as Sergievsky’s estranged wife Svetlana Sergievsky, Global TV representative,  Walter de Courcey will be played by Rob Mills (Grease), and The Arbiter by Brittanie Shipway (Big Fish, The Sapphires). 

Set during the height of the Cold War, two of the world’s greatest chess players, one American, one Russian, find themselves pawns of their own governments’ sparring in the turbulent East-West political arena. As the game climaxes and stakes rise, Florence Vassy, a Hungarian-born refugee finds herself caught in the hurricane between the two grandmasters, in a triangle of power and love.

With music by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus (ABBA), book and lyrics by Tim Rice, CHESS THE MUSICAL is arguably one of the most memorable scores ever heard. Featuring global smash hits ‘I Know Him So Well’ and ‘One Night In Bangkok’, this extraordinary sung-through production also features much-loved standards such as  ‘One Night in Bangkok’, ‘Anthem’, ‘Someone Else’s Story’, ‘Heaven Help My Heart’ and ‘Pity The Child’.

CHESS will open at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on Thursday, April 22nd- Saturday, April 24th before heading to Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane.

Once On This Island 

Brisbane based professional theatre company, Altitude Theatre has announced the cast of their production of Once On This Island.

Directed and Choreographed by Bree Langridge with Musical Direction by Kuki Tipoki, Once On This Island is the sweeping, bewitching tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world, and ready to risk it all for love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the mighty gods who preside over the island make a bet: which is stronger, love or death – the stakes being Ti Moune’s life.

Ti Moune will be played by Lorinda Merrypor (The Sapphires, American Idiot). Other principal cast members are Conor Putland (Les Miserables) as Daniel, Asabi Goodman (A Tribute to Hello, Dolly!, RESPECT: The Show) as Mama Euralie, Henry Kafoa (State of Origin: The Musical!) as Ton Ton Julian, Patrice Tipoki (Les Miserables, WICKED) as Erzulie, Vidya Makan (SIX) as Papa Ge, Rhys Velasquez (Shrek) as Agwe, Garret Lyon (Boy & Girl) as Asaka.

The storytellers are Jade Delmiguez, Winston Morrison, Danielle Remulta, Alvin Rostant, Tallis Tutunoa, Peter Wood, and Mike Zarate. Little Ti Mourne will be played on a rotational basis by Adelaide Arkins, Tia Godbold, and Harriet Naidoo.

Frozen to Play at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre

Frozen is set to take Melbourne by storm this winter when it moves into Her Majesty’s Theatre in June. With presales beginning on Monday, March 1st be sure not to miss out on this amazing show!

Congratulations to Frozen cast members Todd Jacobsson and Kimberley Hodgson who went on stage in the principal roles of Hans and Anna respectively this week. This was the first time both had played the principal roles.
