Once On This Island

As the cast of Altitude Theatre’s Once On This Island bumps in today at La Boite Theatre in the Brisbane suburb of Kelvin Grove, we take a moment to reflect upon the fantastic work Altitude Theatre is doing to raise the profile of local BIPOC performers.

The show is a one-act musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. Based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, it is set in the French Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. It concerns a peasant girl on a tropical island, who uses the power of love to bring people together of different social classes.

Ti Moune as an adult will be portrayed by indigenous Australian, Lorinda Merrypor (The Sapphires, American Idiot). Director, Choreographer, and proud Palawa Woman, Bree Langridge spoke of the cast highly “Every person in this cast stands on their own as an outstanding performer. It was important that we cast a truly authentic village. Our cast is made up of artists of First Nations, Maori, Filipino, Mestiza, Indian, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese, Torres Strait Island, Rotuman, Tongan, Samoan, South African, African American, and European roots. I’m incredibly proud of what every artist brought into the audition room and because of that the village we have assembled will allow this story to soar with passion, heart, and truth.”

Lorinda Merrypor and Bree Langridge.

In keeping with the notion of establishing a truly authentic and inclusive village, one of three young actors portraying the character of young Ti Moune (A young orphan girl found and raised by the island’s people after a devastating flood), Adelaide Arkins will make her theatre debut alongside her mum, Patrice Tipoki (Moulin Rouge, Les Miserables) in what will be a very special moment for them both.
