Hundreds upon hundreds of theatre fans voted for their favourites in this year’s Theatre People Pro Choice Awards. The number of voters for the fourth annual awards smashed the previous record by around 40%.

The overall favourite was clearly Gypsy, taking out wins in a whopping six of the categories. The Production Company’s highly memorable staging of beloved backstage musical Gypsy beat a wide field to take out Best Limited Run/Concert Musical.

For the second year in a row, Gale Edwards was voted Best Director. Future collaborations between Edwards and TPC are highly anticipated!

If you were lucky enough to attend Gypsy you would have noticed that not only was the audience silent throughout the overture, but they also stayed to hear, and applaud, the playout. It is not too surprising, then, that gifted maestro Guy Simpson won Best Musical Director.

Caroline O’Connor (below), currently wowing them in A Christmas Story at New York’s Madison Square Garden, was a very popular choice for Best Actress, receiving the most votes of any nominee in any category.

The Best Supporting Actor/Actress categories were fiercely contested, with the lead position changing daily, and the ultimate favourites winning by tight margins. Talented triple threat Nathan Pinnell (below, left) stood out as ambitious hoofer Tulsa in Gypsy, winning the crowd over with his sensational song and dance number “All I Need Is The Girl.” Christina Tan (below, right) engaged audience affections while portraying Gypsy Rose Lee’s journey from wide-eyed wallflower to sultry stripper.

Demonstrating that audiences love virtuosic displays of dance, especially tap, the winner for Best Choreographer came from Hot Shoe Shuffle, which showcased the spectacular work of co-choreographers David Atkins and Dein Perry.

Versatile leading man Matt Hetherington (below, right) took out the title of Best Actor for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Hetherington previously won a Green Room Award for the role of Freddy Benson in The Production Company’s 2009 production.

The top prize of Best Musical went to mighty Melbourne musical King Kong, which edged out the closest competitor by the narrowest of margins. Kong is still packing them in at the Regent Theatre ahead a planned move to conquer even greater heights on Broadway in the very near future.
