Melbourne, Australia — In light of Australia’s ongoing bushfire crisis, popular Melbourne-based podcast The Gays Are Revolting have raised over one thousand dollars in donations to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. The Gays Are Revolting will perform a live version of their podcast in Melbourne for Midsumma Festival in February, before making their Sydney debut in February as a premier event at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, with all proceeds of tickets booked over a 48-hour period from January 6th to January 8th to be pledged in full to assist in recovery efforts.
Hosted by Thomas Jaspers, Mykiii Rangi, Kyle Dowsett and Luke Forester, The Gays Are Revolting is now an established source of commentary relating to contemporary LGBTIQ+ people in Australia and around the world, amassing over 40,000 listens a month. The Gays Are Revolting has also been nominated for two Australian Podcasting Awards in 2019.
Dowsett says, “We joke on the show about being “environmental gays”, but it’s time to put our money where our mouth is. It’s a small contribution compared to other generous amounts coming through, but as representatives of the Australian queer community we felt it important to play a part nonetheless”.
Rangi goes further to say, “Our home is on fire, and our leaders have their head in the sand. Regular citizens are showing our Federal government not only how angry and scared we are, but also how generous and supportive of climate action we will continue to be”.
Some listeners who had already booked tickets to the live shows bought additional tickets to donate to other listeners who may be affected by the fires. The podcast returns from a holiday break on Saturday 18th January with returning special guest (and first openly lesbian member of the Parliament of Victoria) state Labor MP Harriet Shing to discuss the catastrophic bushfires throughout her electorate and beyond.
The Gays Are Revolting is produced by Lipp Media founder Dan Gregg. Lipp Media is a podcast network by women and members of the LGBTIQ+ community, hosting fourteen shows including The Gays Are Revolting and a brand new daily series from Australian comedian The Fabulous Adam Richard.
Tickets are still available as ‘The Gays Are Revolting Live’ hits the Melba Spiegeltent in Melbourne on Friday 7th February and Giant Dwarf Theatre in Sydney on Friday 28th February. The podcast is available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, with bonus episodes available to subscribers on their Patreon page.
