Mystery Musical

Last year, Sydney’s Squabbalogic Independent Music Theatre introduced its audiences to the concept of Mystery Musicals with its performances of Bye Bye Birdie and Hello, Dolly. Both offerings succeeded in raising funds for Squabbalogic’s upcoming productions while delighting audiences with two evenings of highly engaging theatrical entertainment.

Now, fans will be excited to learn that Squabbalogic will return to the Seymour Centre this month with Mystery Musical #3, promising “a very different musical feel” to its previous mystery works. All of the action is set to take place on Monday 29 February.

Leading the stellar cast is Debora Krizak (Anything Goes, Sondheim on Sondheim), who will be joined by a host of emerging and high profile professional artists, and a full ensemble of students from the Australian Institute of Music.

For those unacquainted with the mystery musical concept, it’s a one-off staged reading (and singing) of a musical theatre work, the identity of which is only revealed to audiences once the auditorium lights dim on the night. This time around, Squabbalogic promises to perform a classic it says has long been waiting in the wings.

The goal of the evening is to reach a fundraising target of $25,000 for Squabbalogic’s 2016 season.

“The enthusiasm for our Mystery Musicals in 2015 was beyond our expectations of this curious idea,” said Squabbalogic artistic director Jay James-Moody. “But they have become a much needed fundraiser for our seasons as we take steps to support our independent artists and work towards adequate wages for the sector, so we’re delighted audiences have been clamouring for more.

“We are so grateful to the incredibly talented cast and creatives for loaning their considerable talents to the cause – and keeping the secret, which can’t be easy!”

The creative team bringing Mystery Musical #3 to the stage includes director Dean Vince (co-director of previous mystery musical, Hello, Dolly) and musical director Hayden Barltrop (musical director of Squabbalogic’s Grey Gardens).

If you’ve had the fortune of attending one of last year’s events, you’re already aware that a Squabbalogic mystery musical is a truly unique and incredibly enjoyable night at the theatre. Those who haven’t yet attended should do themselves a favour and head down to the Seymour Centre to find out what it’s all about!
