Short+Sweet, Australia’s and the world’s ‘biggest little play fest’, comes to the Canberra Theatre Centre this August – with plenty of talent on show!

With 30 ten-minute plays – more than half written by playwrights from the ACT and Capital region –  the two week festival also features local performers and directors ‘mixing it’ with visiting artists.  It promises to be jam-packed with comedy, drama & romance – and that’s just back-stage!

Festival director and local writer and director Trevar Alan Chilver says Short+Sweet Canberra is at once local and eclectic.  “Plays are submitted from all around the world but half of those shortlisted must be local work.
Most performers who participate come from Canberra but we also welcome many visiting actors and directors from Sydney and Melbourne.  This broad engagement builds both social and professional networks.  In past years, many of our artists have gone on to participate in Short+Sweet festivals around Australia as well as in India, Malaysia, the UAE and UK. Others have built their careers from networks made in S+S Canberra.”

For audiences the promise is irresistible: a ‘platter’ of delectable short ‘bites’ of theatre,  concentrated in a two week program from 9 to 19 August at the Canberra Theatre Centre.  Each week features a program of ten plays per night playing Tues-Fri at 7.30pm, with a bonus side serve of ‘Wildcard’ plays Sat 13 Aug 2.30 and 7.30pm. It all climaxes in the Gala Awards Finals on Sat 20 August at 2.30 and 7pm, where judges vote for Best Play, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Script. The audience will also choose its ‘People’s Choice’.
