Before Les Miserables returns to Melbourne, two of its brightest new stars are taking some time to be in the Playground. Playground is a concert of original songs by Nick Hedger and follows on from the success of his debut cabaret show Crap I Found in My Room. Many of the songs in Playground are from musicals Hedger has been working on over the past few years. The title of the show comes from the idea that these were Hedger’s first batch of songs, when he was playing around with genre and trying out new things, exploring while creating.

Amongst the talented cast of six are Kerrie Anne Greenland and Emily Langridge who will take on the roles of Eponine and Cosette in the upcoming Australian season of Les Miserables. Les Miserables is one of the all time great musicals, and both Greenland and Langridge are well aware of the huge expectation and need to live up to the reputation of these iconic roles. Indeed, it is an incredible opportunity for any performer.
But Playground brings a different opportunity … to perform some new Australian pieces of music and all in their usual Australian accents. There is no expectation that comes with well known music, like the score of Les Miserables. Playground is a refreshing opportunity to support and promote new Australian work and, for Greenland and Langridge, give their own interpretation to these songs. The preparation process is still the same.
Greenland and Langridge describe Hedger's music as being varied in styles. Some is rock, some is softer and more romantic. Some songs have been performed in Hedger's previous works, while others will have their premiere performance. It is a night of Hedger's best works.
Playground will be not just a concert of artists standing and singing, but a performance that gives small pieces of theatre to the audience.
The full cast of talented performers includes:
– Brent Hill (The Pirates of Penzance, The Producers, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum)
– Kerrie Anne Greenland (A Celebration of Cole Porter, In A Pink Tutu, Les Miserables)
– Emily Langridge (Pirates of Penzance, Gypsy, Les Miserables)
– Erin Kennedy (Hot Shoe Shuffle, Mary Poppins, Les Miserables)
– Andrew Hondromatidis (South Pacific, Wind in the Willows, ABC2’s twentysomething)
– Ben Nicholson (Atlantis in Concert, The Front, The Crystal Boomerang)
Playground is a unique opportunity to hear some new Australian work being performed by a talented cast … and for the fans of Les Miserables, a chance to come and get to know our newest Eponine and Cosette.
