Perth might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about boundary-pushing comedy, cabaret and arts. It isn’t for us either, we come to Melbourne for that. But, there’s enough for a bloody amazing six show program, so if you could at least feign interest in the following…
Fringe-lovin’ video platform Normal Place presents PERTHONALITIES, a diverse season of livestreamed shows from Perth’s creative underground as part of the 2020 Melbourne Fringe Festival. With coronavirus and border restrictions keeping WA artists and Melbourne audiences home, the shows will be presented online from November 12-29, beamed directly from a pop-up studio in Perth.
The program is a hand-picked selection of the funnest, most unusual, memorable shows seen in Normal Place’s home state, adapted and re-imagined for your laptop, tablet, TV or phone.
■ Have a literal bath (in separate baths) with the audiovisual overload of alternative cabaret idiot Tomas Ford
(best known for his ridiculous Crap Music Rave Party) in COME HAVE A BATH WITH ME?
■ Journey around the galaxy with improvised sci-fi space opera CAPTAIN SPACESHIP!
■ Thrill to ukulele cabaret crooner Jamie Mykaela, as she cancels your Dad’s favourite artists live on stage in her expose of gross predatory rockstars, DADDY.
■ Dive into the spoken word of two of Perth’s premier poets, Saoirse Nash and Jakob Boyd (aka Laundryman) in TO BECOME A PHOENIX.
■ Cackle yourself into gigglefits and learn to understand “the young people” through songs and stories of Jackson Canny in GEN Z GEN DREAD.
■ Endure a bizarre variety show hosted by a twisted, ranting, wildly malfunctioning laptop in MAC THE COMEDY COMPUTER’S MANIC MELBOURNE MELTDOWN
Every show in the program is performing three weekly sessions throughout the festival from November 12-29.
