The Jellicle Cats are back in town and will soon check in to Chatswood’s Concourse Theatre!

From next Friday 13 January, for a limited season, Packemin Youth Productions is bringing the much-loved classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical CATS back to the stage, promising a staging of the musical like we’ve never seen before.

Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, CATS first premiered on London’s West End in 1981 and is today the fourth longest-running show in both Broadway and West End history. Seen by more than 73 million people worldwide and the winner of ‘Best Musical’ gongs at both the Olivier and Tony Awards, it’s set to be adapted for film under the direction of Tom Hooper within the next couple of years.

CATS is the story of a tribe of cats – the Jellicle cats – reunited for one special night each year in a celebration of who they are. But it’s also a night on which their wise leader, Old Deuteronomy, selects one of the Jellicle cats to journey to the Heaviside layer for rebirth into a new life.

CATS is the third youth production to be staged by Packemin. Founded in 2010, the company began its youth productions in 2015, when The Wiggles’ Sam Moran starred in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Following the success of its inaugural show, Packemin Youth Productions returned last year to Chatswood with Back to the 80s, featuring Mark Simpson. The company provides opportunities for top young performers in Sydney aged 20 and under.

Packemin’s CATS will feature over 100 young performers, including a senior cast and three alternating junior casts. Simon Pryce, well known on Australia’s professional musical theatre circuit, will appear as Old Deuteronomy/Bustopher Jones.

Whether you’re a CATS fan from way back or a musical theatre nut who’s not yet had the chance to experience one of Lloyd Webber’s most successful early works, consider heading down to The Concourse for a celebration of the Jellicle cats!
