Oh! The places you’ll go with Western Arts Theatre Inc as they present Seussical, opening on July 4th, at The Clocktower Centre in Mooney Ponds.
Seussical is a musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, based on the children’s stories of Dr. Seuss, with most of its plot being based on Horton Hears a Who! while incorporating many other stories. Since it’s Broadway Debut in 2000, it has become a favourite for schools and community theatre companies.
This production is directed and choreographed by Kai Mann-Robertson who promises us a very different version of Seussical to what audiences have seen before!
“Few artists have as much timeless whimsy and imagination as Theodor Seuss Geisel. Growing up, his books have always had a place on our shelves, and all of those impossible creatures, over the top chracters and wacky inventions contained on those pages drove me to think about things a little differently. At its heart, Seussical is the story of Horton coming to terms with being a father, so I have chosen to interpret that through a brand new lens of creativity”, says director Robertson.
During the rollicking journey that is Seussical we meet the all too familiar characters of The Cat In The Hat and Thing One and Thing Two, Horton the Elephant, the Sour Kangaroo, Mayzie LaBird and Gertrude McFuzz. Add to this mix The Who’s on Whoville, the Wickersham Brothers and a sneaky appearance by The Grinch, and the whole Seuss famiy is there!
With the cast of over thirty talented Dr Seuss fans singing songs like “Oh, the thinks you can think”, “Solla Sollew”, “Alone in the Universe”, and of course, “Green Eggs and Ham”, this production of Seussical is guaranteed to transport you back to your childhood.
With Musical Direction by Ben Samuel, the cast features Kinloch Anstissas The Cat in the Hat, Scott Bradley as Horton the Elephant, Georgia Slaymaker as JoJo the Mayors Son, Sarah-Jayne Phillips as Gertrude McFuzz and Jaz Wickson as Mayzie LaBird.
