Neglected Musicals will present the Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch musical comedy The Goodbye Girl at Hayes Theatre Co on Monday 26 October and Sunday 1 November for 3 shows only.  Directed by Tyran Parke this 1993 Broadway Musical is based on Simon’s original screenplay for the 1977 film of the same name which starred Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss.

Neglected Musicals presents musical theatre that has never or rarely been seen in Australia.  Neglected Musicals presents a reading of a chosen show with scripts in hand, with the musical numbers sung through, after only one day’s rehearsal.

“With the pedigree of talent involved in creating this show originally on Broadway, it always held great interest for me, said the director of The Goodbye Girl, Tyran Parke.  “I’ve loved the hilarious, award-winning movie and the subsequent Marvin Hamlish / David Zippel songs for twenty years.  It’s funny, it’s romantic and it’s got a truly winning Broadway score that I know audiences will fall in love with.”

The original production, directed by Michael Kidd, opened on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre on March 4, 1993 and closed on August 15, 1993 after 188 performances and 23 previews. The opening cast included Bernadette Peters as Paula McFadden and Martin Short as Elliot Garfield, marking Martin Short’s Broadway debut.

Egotistical actor Elliot Garfield sublets a friend’s Manhattan apartment only to discover it is still occupied by his friend’s ex-girlfriend Paula, a former dancer, and her precocious pre-teen daughter Lucy. Initially suspicious and antagonistic, Elliot and Paula arrive at an uneasy truce.  While attempting to cohabit as peacefully as possible, despite their differences of opinion and temperament, Elliot and Paula find themselves attracted to each other.

“The Goodbye Girl movie is loved by so many and when it opened on Broadway an Australian production started to be put together.  However as is sometimes the way with showbiz, plans were shelved and Sydney audiences haven’t been able to see this five-time Tony-Nominated musical until now,” said producer Michelle Guthrie.
