The team at MLOC Productions are eagerly anticipating the opening of their latest production – The Witches of Eastwick.
Director, Jane Court, believes a unique aspect of John Dempsey and Dana P Rowe’s musical comedy is its strong roles for women. “This is something of a change for many musicals. Even though the lead character of Darryl Van Horne is male, there are the three female 'witches' plus an ingénue, a little girl, the town matriarch and all the ladies of the town.”
They are strong roles, and this production calls for a cast of many, but Court is confident that MLOC have an ensemble up to the task.
“Our lead performers are outstanding. Michael Young plays Darryl Van Horne with Erin Kelleher, Lucy MacVicar and Susie McCann as the three 'witches', plus Lucy Nicolson and Colin Sephton as Mr and Mrs Gabriel. It is first time at MLOC for Erin and Lucy but the others are well known to MLOC audiences. Lucy Nicolson's daughter Lily plays the role of the strange little girl who warns the town of forthcoming trouble.”
For fans of the original Witches of Eastwick, they can expect a change from John Updike’s 1950’s Maine, USA.
“The original book was written in the early 1980s … so even though the book is set in 1950s small town USA, I have set the show in the 1980s as a tribute to this time. It has been a lot of fun sourcing retro gear and arranging for the younger cast members to ‘fluff’ up their hair.”
Audiences can see the production in all its teased and tousled glory from June 15-23 at the Phoenix Theatre, Elwood.
