With more kitsch than a drag queen has wigs, The Butterfly Club will host a glitter of fabulous indie theatre this summer for Midsumma Festival.  As one of Melbourne’s premiere cabaret and independent art spaces, this year they are presenting 8 different productions across the 22 day festival.

The hand-picked line up features a variety of genres including stand-up comedy, drag, burlesque, cabaret and theatre. Dean Arcuri, a hugely familiar face of the Melbourne LGBTQIA+ community will be performing his solo cabaret show Dean Arcuri is Yours Sincerely which features real life accounts from LGBT elders and their stories of when the fight for rights were just beginning. Festival favourites and playwrites Darwent and Gray present Love By the Hour an inportant theatre piece exploring the conversation of friendship and sex work. Other performances in the program include variety show Whoop-Dee-Doo Review, Confetti, How Gay Am I?, The Boy I Paid For and Sweetie.

As a long time haven of Melbourne’s queerest and dearest, The Butterfly Club hosts over 1000 independent performances a year, largely made by or supported by the LGBTQIA+ community. The opportunity to present as part of Midsumma festival,  Australia’s premiere queer arts and cultural festival, is a chance to celebrate the diverse mix of community that continue to put independent theatre on the map.
