Ben Kochan Throws a Stool at the Audience is a show where Ben will probably not throw a stool at the audience. The stool is probably a metaphor. You will have to see the show to know for sure.

What will be thrown at you is stand-up, music, dance, snake charming, sword swallowing and all the tricks Ben can learn from the Now You See Me 2 magic set.

This is Ben’s debut solo show at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, after being the MC for the prestigious Comedy Zone in 2019. He recently opened for Tom Gleeson and performed stand-up at triple j’s Good Az Friday and Splendour in the Grass. In other words: this Noodle Head™ is going places so get on board.

How would you describe your show to someone who knew nothing about it?

I’d say it’s like no other comedy show you’ve ever seen, assuming you’ve never seen a comedy show before. If you have seen a comedy show before, then I’d say it’s like a charcuterie board of comedy. It’s high quality, there’s lots of bits and bobs, and when it’s done you’ll be like “wow, how about that, that was nice wasn’t it Phil?”

What/Who was its inspiration?

I had a picture taken of me where I was pretending to throw a stool at the camera so the image looks like I’m throwing a stool at you. I thought Ben Kochan Throws a Stool at The Audience was a funny name, and the show has absolutely nothing to do with it.

What do you think its best quality is?

I bought a $14 suit from an op shop that I’m going to wear and it looks terrible but I’m excited to wear it. In total, I’ve probably spent $250 on props for the show.

Why should people see it?

I’d really like them to. I’m quite nice, and polite, and I think that should be rewarded.

If there is one thing you would like to say to your fans, what is it?

Who or what has been the greatest influence on your career?

Who makes you want to create, be funny – Who inspires you?

Vinnie Chase

When did it become clear to you that comedy and entertainment were your passions?

I stood up on my desk at school and I said “oh captain my captain”. Robin Williams was my teacher at the time and he was in a bit of strife. Slowly but surely everyone in the class started standing on their desks. I thought, if I can get the class’s attention like that, maybe I could make a go of this show biz thing.

What does comedy, creation and entertainment mean to you?

At the moment it means I have no money.

What are 3 words that describe you?

Hip, with-it, spunky

What are 3 things that would surprise people to learn about you?

I’m best friends with Elton John, I’ve got a cat and I own a Sumo Salad franchise

What is next for you?

If you’re asking what’s next for me right now; I’m going to finish answering these questions, and probably have a shower. I just did a boxing class where a lady absolutely beat the crapola out of me and I’m covered in sweat.
