First up, there are the four big musicals in the East End Theatre District
The final Melbourne performance is on Sunday 19th July at 1pm, The Princess Theatre, before the SS America sets sail for the northern states.
Nominated for numerous Helpmann Awards, including Best Musical, this classic musical has been given a fresh new look with some brilliant choreography by Andrew Hallsworth and a star-studded cast including Caroline O’Connor, Todd McKenney, Alex Rathgeber and Claire Lyon.
The Rocky Horror Show
The final performance on Sunday 19th July at 5.30pm at The Comedy Theatre of this 40th anniversary production.
This return Melbourne season features Craig McLachlan in his Helpmann Award winning role, along with entertainment legend Bert Newton as the narrator.
The final tickets are now on sale for this all Australian musical. It plays at Her Majesty’s Theatre until August 26th before heading to Brisbane in September and stars Thomas Lacey and Phoebe Panaretos as Scott and Fran.
You might even get to dance on the stage at the end of the show!
The Lion King
Loved by children and adults of all ages, this musical is playing at The Regent Theatre until November 1st. Final tickets are about to be released for sale.
There is also the Arts Centre Precinct with two options.
West Side Story
This is the 50th musical by The Production Company and features Gareth Keegan and Anna O’Byrne as the star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria. It plays in the State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne until July 19th.
Victoria Opera deliver this Sondheim musical, starring Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Antoinette Halloran. It’s on at the Playhouse until July 25th
And finally, for the first time, there are two musicals playing at the new Alex Theatre in St Kilda.
The Alex Theatre provides production companies a viable commercial alternative to the city theatres. The Alex Theatre has several theatres of different sizes and with lower rental costs than the CBD, producers can offer more affordable tickets for patrons. It’s like an Off Broadway theatre – or more correctly “Off East End Theatre District”.
Following a sold out season at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre, this award winning musical is playing at the Alex Theatre until August 2nd and features a star-studded cast including Helen Dallimore in her Helpmann nominated role as Mrs Johnson, Bobby Fox and Josh Piterman as the Johnson twins and Michael Cormick as the narrator.
This new Australian musical takes a satirical look at life working in Australia’s public health system. It’s on at the Alex Theatre until July 26th.
