With Tap being a biggest trend on Melbourne's theatre scene at the moment, there is no better time to make the most of this addictive art form and it's universal essence when it comes to entertainment.

I was lucky enough to chat with Winston Morrison, Director of Rhythm in Motion, a tap extravaganza which runs for one night only. He was lovely enough to offer a 10%discount to all TP readers, so just follow the booking info below to get your reduced rate.

Where do you want to take tap dancing in Australia?

I want it to be celebrated not only in the dance community but in the general public.  The festival is a great way to bring tap dancers together and lift everyone up through the events, classes, performance opportunities and feed off the talent and passion of tap dancers around Australia and around the world.  After that, I want to create a stage how that features tap dance and tours, putting tap back in the mind of the public, and therefore providing work for tap dancers

Why have you chosen Ayodele to be the headline performer and teacher for the tap festival this year?

Brilliance.  When I first took her residency in 2008 in New York I was impressed by her rhythmic and dance flavor, her clean fast feet, musical choreography, and her sense of ease. It was an inspiring and fun experience.  I had a great routine at the end and a level of excellence to reach for.  Because I want everyone here to have the access to the same privilege that I had, I am flying Ayodele out here so you can have close access to her for a week!   Ayodele’s track record as a tap dancer (performing with the world’s greatest, Savion Glover for example) is very impressive.

What can audience members at the Festival Concert expect?

Firstly we will have a lineup of tap dancers from USA, Australia, Canada and London, the most international cast for a tap festival that we have ever had in Australia!  This level of international diversity in a faculty may not happen again, word of mouth got out after people experienced the the first festival and we are lucky the stars aligned to allow this diversity of tap artists to come together out of their busy schedules this year for this one week of tap in Melbourne!

There will be a live band accompanying on stage and not only will you see solo performances from the tap artists, we will perform tributes to famous tap legends and showcase routines that the festival attendees in the program have worked on in their 5 day choreography residencies.

It will be a great mix of classic and new works, some history lessons thrown in, rhythmic conversations, an overall feel good vibe, athletic displays and inspiring moments!
