In less than three weeks, the brand new national tour of MAMMA MIA! takes the stage for its first performance at the Canberra Theatre Centre, before hitting Sydney (in February), Perth (in May), Melbourne (in July) and then Adelaide (in October).

Inspired by the timeless music of ABBA and seen to date by more than 60 million people worldwide, MAMMA MIA! is the story of Sophie, a young bride-to-be, and her efforts to ascertain the identity of her father on the eve of her Greek Island wedding.

MAMMA MIA! returns to Australia in a new production directed by Helpmann Award-winner Gary Young, accompanied by a creative team that includes choreographer Tom Hodgson, musical supervisor Stephen Amos, set designer Linda Bewick, costumer designer Suzy Strout, lighting designer Gavan Swift and sound designer Michael Waters.

Leading the production as mother-of-the-bride, Donna Sheridan, is Natalie O’Donnell, who played the role of Sophie in the original Australian production in 2001. On this occasion, Sophie will be played by Sarah Morrison, who recently impressed audiences with her wonderful portrayal of Lisa in the world premiere of Ladies in black.

Other principal cast members include Alicia Gardiner (playing Rosie), Jayde Westaby (playing Tanya), Ian Stenlake (playing Sam Carmichael), Phillip Lowe (playing Harry Bright), Josef Ber (playing Bill Austin) and Stephen Mahy (playing Sky).

Last week in Sydney, media outlets were invited to rehearsals for the upcoming production, and Theatre People was there to catch a glimpse of the action. Introduced by Young, the cast ran through four numbers from the show. Here are a few of our snaps.
