Luigi Lucente close up

Luigi Lucente is one of Australia’s most promising emerging leading men of musical theatre. Lucente was a finalist in the Rob Guest Endowment Award in 2011 and already had a string of stage credits including The Rocky Horror Show, Wicked, Jersey Boys and Guys and Dolls before taking on leading roles in The Last Five Years and Assassins. Anyone fortunate enough to see Lucente in the title role in Magnormus’ one night only performance of Pippin would have taken note of this performer and his critically acclaimed performance. Lucente then backed this up with a mature and sensitive portrayal of Leo Frank in Parade, earning Lucente at Theatre People Pro Choice Award nomination. Most recently, Lucente played the role of Corporal Eddie Birdlace in the Australian premiere of Dogfight at the Hayes Theatre, again to critical acclaim. Theatre goers already familiar with Luigi Lucente will be certain of one thing: his ability to embody a particular character and bring an incredible realism to each and every performance.
.
Last year Lucente premiered his own cabaret show: JIM MORRISON: KALEIDOSCOPE in Perth, before a season in Melbourne earlier in 2015 as part of the Midsumma Festival; both seasons earning rave reviews. Audiences of Kaleidoscope will be quick to discover Luigi Lucente is more than just a triple threat of musical theatre – the guy is also a talented pianist. Written by Lucente, Kaleidoscope is a one-man show that provides a glimpse into the extraordinary life and mind of Jim Morrison: poet, prophet, shaman and showman.
.
“Lucente accompanies himself on piano with the sensitivity and the voice of an Elton John, the passion of a Peter Allen, and the wild abandon of a Jerry Lee Lewis. It is alpha dog cabaret, bewitching in its transformation.” – Theatre People

“I’ve always been fascinated with Morrison’s body of work, a short-lived dramatic fireball of radical ideas and rebellion. However, beyond the bluster of THE DOORS music and his strange poetry, there lurked a melting pot of personalities. It’s those facets of oddity that I thought would be most interesting to explore theatrically, lifting the lid on the mystery and myth that surrounded him. The show, like the title suggests, peer through these keyholes like somewhat of a psychedelic cabaret experience,” explains Lucente.

Inspired by the words, poems and testimonies and life of Jim Morrison and set to the rocking carnival score of THE DOORS, Kaleidoscope features classic renditions of ‘Touch Me’, ‘Light My Fire’, ‘Riders On The Storm’, ‘Break On Through (To The Other Side)’ ‘People Are Strange’ and ‘Love Her Madly’.

Kaleidoscope is a unique fusion of text and song that transports audiences through the explosive decade of the 1960’s using the trippy musical phrasing and apologetically raw lyrics that filled six albums of The Doors.

“I see myself as a huge fiery comet, a shooting star. Everyone stops, points up and gasps “Oh look at that!” Then – whoosh, and I’m gone … and they’ll never see anything like it ever again … and they won’t be able to forget me – ever.” – Jim Morrison

While Kaleidoscope will appeal to fans of Jim Morrison and The Doors, much of the music are timeless classics and will be known to audiences of all ages. Lucente takes these iconic rock classics and breathes new life into them, whilst at the same time, providing an insight into who this man really was, what motivated him, what inspired him and what touched him.  Kaleidoscope is both entertaining and insightful.

“On one level, Lucente’s Kaleidoscope is a humorous, intense, sometimes uncomfortable and unpredictable experience, yet always entertaining. On another level the narrative covers the group’s rise and fall in snapshot flashbacks. The stream of consciousness format also allows one entry into the mind of a man constantly pushing buttons and boundaries. Taking no prisoners with his show’s high energy execution, Lucente’s Kaleidoscope would have made Morrison very proud.”  – Theatre People
