First Date the Musical opened at Chapel Off Chapel last week in an Australian professional premiere. Leading man, Jordon Mahar admits it’s not something he thought he’d be doing in just his first year since graduating from VCA.
“It’s definitely exciting!” said Mahar.
Jordon Mahar plays the role of Aaron, who has been set up on a blind date. Aaron is a little awkward and doesn’t have much dating experience. Mahar says there’s a number of parallels between his on stage character and his own real life.
“I’ve had some awkward first dates, but I don’t have a huge amount of dating experience – like my character Aaron,” he commented.
The original script of First Date the Musical is set in New York, but Director Mark Taylor chose to set this production, by Pursued By Bear, in Melbourne instead.
“The script is quite universal. You could base this story anywhere and it would still make perfect sense. Why not do it in Australia?” Mahar asked, adding, “It’s such a rare opportunity to be given such a cool, new piece of theatre and to be able to do it in your own tongue as well.”
Mahar describes First Date the Musical as “comedy’s love letter to Broadway”.
“The show is really for anyone who feels like they have a bit of a romantic streak … and even if they don’t – which my character will showcase in the show,” laughed Mahar.
“I think anyone who’s ever been in a relationship before will find something to really enjoy about this show.”
Jordon Mahar has learnt some important tips about first dates from his character of Aaron:
– Don’t talk about your ex on your first date
– Don’t get into deep conversations too early
– Don’t be too vague and generic – learn something about the person
First Date the Musical is fun night out and makes for the perfect date night – no matter how long you’ve been together.
