On July 6th last year, a historic photo shoot took place in Melbourne. It was the first time in five years, when Melbourne itself was declared a “full house”, hosting a major musical theatre production in every heritage theatre in the city. The photo shoot brought together the casts and crews of Wicked (The Regent Theatre), The Rocky Horror Show (The Comedy Theatre), Les Miserables (Her Majesty’s Theatre) and The King and I (The Princess Theatre).
This rare photographic opportunity was captured by media, fans and performers alike.
It was all for this one impressive photo:
Just eleven months later, it seems history is repeating itself. Melbourne again has four major musicals playing: The Lion King (The Regent Theatre), The Rocky Horror Show (The Comedy Theatre), Strictly Ballroom (Her Majesty’s Theatre) and Anything Goes (The Princess Theatre). While there is no talk of another gathering of the casts for a photo shoot, the question has been asked if indeed it could take place again. Didn’t we all love the selfies appearing on Instagram and Twitter that day?!
Whether or not there is another photo to commemorate this occasion, one thing is assured: musical theatre is alive and well in Melbourne. Beyond these four major musicals, in July there will also be West Side Story opening at the Arts Centre and Blood Brothers opening at The Alex.
Melbourne – you are spoilt for choice – and I think can claim the title of “Musical Theatre Capital of Australia”.
