Hayes Theatre Co’s
Previews and Announcements for 2017
Tonight Hayes Theatre Co held its twice-yearly COMING SOON event, where programming announcements for the second half of 2017 were made. Hosted by David Campbell, the event unveiled the world premiere of a new Australian musical developed through Hayes Theatre Co’s New Musicals Australia program – MELBA starring opera legend Emma Matthews as Melba. After three and a half years of musicals at Hayes Theatre Co, and thanks to support from the Russell Mills Foundation, the theatre is proud to announce its first production of a Stephen Sondheim musical – ASSASSINS. Starring David Campbell, ASSASSINS will play from September 15. Toby Francis (currently starring in KINKY BOOTS) will produce and star in the musical adaptation of Nick Hornby’s HIGH FIDELITY in November.
There is more cabaret to be announced as the year goes on. However, it was revealed that Olympic gold-medallist turned award-winning cabaret artist Matthew Mitcham will appear in his new cabaret UNDER THE COVERS in July. Other special events announced at tonight’s COMING SOON event include a NEGLECTED MUSICALS presentation of MAME starring Virginia Gay; and new seminars for HAYES CREATIVE including Skills for Producing, Empowering Female Creatives, and How I Got My Start.

A New Musical
Directed by Wayne Harrison
Book and Lyrics by Nicholas Christo
Music by Johannes Luebbers
Adapted from the book “Marvelous Melba” by Ann Blainey
Also starring Annie Aitken, Michael Blakley, Caitlin Berry, Blake Erickson, Adam Rennie and Samuel Skuthorp.
From 11 August
Dame Nellie Melba was the most celebrated singer of her generation. Lauded on more than three continents as a phenomenon, her life was the stuff that dreams are made of, but her journey to the top was not always untroubled.
From humble beginnings as Nellie Mitchell in Melbourne, to the stages of opera houses across Europe, MELBA charts the life of a woman who was determined to be the best in a conservative world. Melba’s life was filled with triumph and tragedy, stardom and shame – a story that is little known beyond her stellar career.
Developed through the New Musicals Australia program at Hayes Theatre Co with writers Nicholas Christo and Johannes Luebbers, this new musical is based on the book MARVELOUS MELBA by Ann Blainey, the eye-opening story of a modern, feisty heroine light years ahead of her antiquated age.
Proudly supported by City of Sydney, Australia Council and SBW Foundation

In a fairground shooting gallery a group of misfits gather. Each has a problem they need to solve and each has discovered the answer – they must shoot the President of the United States!
From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, we learn of the many varied and unusual ways that each has committed (or attempted to commit) the ultimate crime; their motivations and their desire to be recognized for their actions in a world where they are largely dismissed and ignored.
Described by Sondheim as the show that comes closest to his expectations of it, ASSASSINS is a chilling, and timely, reminder that those in power ignore the poor and disenfranchised to their peril.
This production is proudly sponsored by The Russell Mills Foundation
