The site of the old Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE in Collingwood was taken over by Arts Victoria in July 2010 after being chosen as the permanent home of Circus Oz. While this development is underway it will only occupy 60% of the space.

Last year Arts Victoria undertook a feasibility study, selecting nine different groups from a wide range of art forms, and is now developing a proposal to create a multi-organisation arts precinct in the remaining 40% of the site.

The development plan is strongly supported by City of Yarra Council who has established the Room to Create fund, a charity aimed at generating funds for artists and arts organisations.

While the cost of the project is still just an estimate, there is a lot of support for the project in the local and wider Melbourne arts community.
