VICTORIAN OPERA’S ‘LA SONNAMBULA’ IS THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTION TO BE STREAMED ON THE OPERA PLATFORM

Victorian Opera’s ‘La Sonnambula’ the First Australian Production Streamed via Opera Platform

After captivating Melbourne audiences and receiving rave reviews, Victorian Opera’s concert of Bellini’s La Sonnambula is the first Australian production to be streamed via The Opera Platform.

The Opera Platform was launched in May 2015 for the promotion and enjoyment of opera. The platform is curated by lead partner Opera Europa, the leading service organisation for professional opera companies and opera festivals. Opera Europa currently serves 170 member companies from 43 different countries across five continents. Victorian Opera is the first Australian company to join the organisation.

La Sonnambula marks Victorian Opera’s first production to be streamed, available free and on demand, highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to increasing accessibility through digital technologies. This follows Victorian Opera’s first foray into live-streaming in 2016 with a concert exclusively available to company subscribers, The Darkest Night.

The performance of Bellini’s masterpiece was recorded on Friday 5 May at Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall. Conducted by Victorian Opera’s Artistic Director Richard Mills, La Sonnambula saw the return of star soprano Jessica Pratt alongside the Australian premiere of Italian bass Paolo Pecchioli. Tenor Carlos E. Bárcenas continued his long association with the company while much-loved Australian soprano Greta Bradman made her Victorian Opera debut.

The acclaimed concert received stellar reviews, including five stars from Limelight Magazine. Audiences worldwide will have the opportunity to experience the glory of the performance from Monday 10 July until Tuesday 31 October via The Opera Platform.

Victorian Opera’s next streamed event is Three Tales on Friday 27 October, during which digital audiences are invited into the rehearsal room as highlights of three new Australian works are presented after a week-long workshop. The live-streamed event reveals the early stages of three commissioned works by Katie Noonan and Zac Hurren, Stefan Cassomenos, and Dermot Tutty, each assigned one of Flaubert’s Three Tales. The complete works will be presented in Victorian Opera’s 2019 season.

Quote attributable to Victorian Opera’s Managing Director, Andrew Snell:

“I’m greatly excited for Victorian Opera to stream its first production, free and on demand, via The Opera Platform. The company aims to make opera as accessible as possible through a range of means, including digital technologies. Audiences across the globe will be able to experience this sublime concert performance and hear some of the finest voices from Australia and abroad. We’re very proud to be the first Australian company to stream a production via The Opera Platform. This is another wonderful opportunity to showcase our work on the world stage and share it with fans and first comers alike.”
