If you like your music theatre feminist, experimental and original, you’re in luck. Citizen Theatre’s next project called Mara KORPER is all of those things and more.
The independent company are building a strong reputation for their unique brand of innovative theatrical experiments that combine music and theatre in exciting new ways. Mara KORPER – their most ambitious work yet – is about to get its first public reading at the iconic La Mama Courthouse ahead of its world premiere next year.
Mara KORPER is not your typical music theatre show: it focuses on themes of extremism, gender and body image and is set in a dystopian future, picking up where Orwell and Huxley left off. This brilliant and terrifying sci-fi theatrical experience takes place in the bizarre futuristic world of ‘The Mother’, where gender is obsolete and the flesh must remain whole.
The show is written by Citizen Theatre Artistic Director Jayde Kirchert, with music by noted composer Anthony Lyons. Kirchert says “Music Theatre is a really complex artform and public readings are a vital part of the development process. They also give audiences a chance to see a new piece come to life and their opinions and thoughts are really important to the growth of the piece.”
