Uked! the first play-along ukulele musical

A kooky ukey love story with unique audience engagement

Uked! the first play-along ukulele musical will premiere at the historic Guildford Music Hall from 20-30 June, bringing theatre and ukulele lovers from all over Victoria to the tiny Central Victorian town.

Uked! is the hilarious and poignant story of Karla, who is dumped on her 50th birthday by her violin-playing boyfriend, Brian. Desperate to belong and prove her musical worth, Karla buys a ukulele and joins a dating site – learning that love and the ukulele have a lot in common.

Castlemaine actor and singer Rebecca Morton stars as Karla and Bendigo musician, performer and ukulele teacher Pete Gavin stars as all her YouTube ukulele teachers and dating interests, with cameo performances from Guildford’s Tex and Fi Chant.

Writer and producer Jane Cafarella says, “I think the story will resonate with everyone. Karla is one of those people who’s fallen through the cracks of life. She’s never married, never had kids and never had a career. The world is changing and she’s struggling to find her place in it. But she’s resourceful, funny and active about finding a solution. Already, people are telling me, ‘I know a Karla!’

“I wrote the show for all the Karla’s out there, and to celebrate the humble ukulele’s ability to bring people together – and as an antidote to the daily misery of the news.”

Uked! offers unique levels of audience engagement. Audience members can just sit back and enjoy the show, OR they can bring their uke and sing and play along with Karla. A screen will display all the chords and lyrics for the sing-along songs, and chord diagrams will decorate the hall.

Those who have always wanted to tread the boards can register to be on stage playing Karla’s fellow club members. (Register at [email protected] and then book your discounted ticket.)

But you don’t need to play the ukulele to enjoy the show. “Those who hate audience participation will be seated near the bar, ” Jane says. “There’s something for everyone. It’s going to be a hoot!”
