AUDITION BRIEF

Singing. Satire. Subtext. All at Mach 3! If you see only one musical comedy about mounting a mega-musical based on the movie Top Gun, make it Top Gun! The Musical. You’ll laugh. You’ll hum. You’ll believe a jet can fly!

For anyone who’s ever cringed through Cats, felt the need for speed, or wondered “who thought that would be a good idea?”, comes this new satirical musical. Writer Billy Palmer is about to crash and burn. His musical adaptation of Top Gun is going off the rails and he really needs a hit … especially after the debacle of Apocalypse Wow! Instead, he’s saddled with a quarrelling cast, a shady ex-Special Forces producer, and a bit of bad luck. Now if only everyone would stop singing!

Top Gun! The Musical originally premiered during the Toronto Fringe in 2002 and was nominated for multiple Dora Awards, including Outstanding New Musical. At the time it premiered in New York in 2004, it was still the most successful production in Toronto Fringe History.

In 2004, Top Gun! The Musical was selected to be part of the Inaugural New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF – “NYMF was honored with a 2013 Drama Desk Award recognizing its first decade of creating and nurturing new musical theatre, ensuring the future of this essential art form”.) The first season of NYMF featured new musicals by Stephen Schwartz, Avenue Q’s Marx and Lopez and Chicago’s Kander and Ebb – Top Gun! The Musical was in with the best. It was remounted in 2012 in Toronto and ran once again in the US in Florida and in Texas.

Following successful runs in North America, Salty Theatre is bringing the show back to life and to Australia for the first time ever! Salty Theatre is a new Melbourne based company, co-founded by Melbourne theatre, dance and cabaret veteran Sarahlouise Younger and Canadian theatre and screen vet Ashley Taylor. Their first production, the Australian Premiere of People Suck: A Musical Airing of Grievances, had a hilarious and successful first run at The Butterfly Club this past March. (reviews: You Should See ItArtsHub) They very much look forward to following this success with Top Gun! The Musical at the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

AUDITION DATES

Auditions will be held from 10am to 6pm on Saturday 8th June.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Please take a look at the character breakdowns below. If you would like to audition, please send a headshot, resume, cover letter and the character(s) you’re interested in to [email protected]

Note that in terms of the music in the show, the style is very much musical comedy. The actors in the Top Gun! show (within the show) work very hard at all times to make it as awesome as possible, but the reality is it’s a bad show so some of the musical numbers are ‘bad’ musical numbers executed with great fervor and passion. They are trying their damndest to make it good! Keep the humour in mind when selecting your audition pieces.

Please select two contrasting musical theatre songs, one must be comedic. Please bring sheet music, an accompanist will be provided. Please do not bring a backing track.

You may be asked to read from the script on the day.

AUDITION LOCATION:

The SWell Centre

2 Minona St., Hawthorn, Vic 3122

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS

The nature of the backstage setting of the show means that each of the actors is playing both the comic-book, TOP GUN! Larger than life version of their characters from the show-within-the-show, and the actor that plays them in the ensemble. For the sake of audience (and ensemble) clarity, the characters are only referred to by their “Top Gun” names.

All actors must have terrific comedic timing and strong voices. Note that this production will be accompanied by piano only, as part of the show-within-the-show, and actors WILL NOT BE MIC’D.

“Maverick”: Early 20s to 40. Male. Any ethnicity. The actor who will be playing Maverick in the musical version of Top Gun! If it ever gets off the ground… His real name is Chad, but this is only said in one moment. He prefers being called Maverick both on and off stage. As the actor in the ensemble, he is dumb, a bit slow on the uptake, simple and sweet. As Maverick in the Top Gun! scenes he is a confident, cocksure pilot. Must have great comedic timing and strong vocal ability. Must be able to move. Written for high Baritone/Tenor but please submit regardless if you feel the role is right for you. We are looking for strength of comedic acting first and foremost, we can make adjustments for vocal stylings.

Billy Palmer: 30s to 40s. Male. Any ethnicity. The writer and director of the musical adaptation of “Top Gun”, Billy is hanging on by a thread and is desperate for a hit after his last musical debacle, Apocalypse Wow! He tries and fails to keep his cast in order, can’t stop ogling “Charlie” and is oblivious to Wendy’s affection, despite the fact that he would crash and burn without her help with the production. Must have great comedic timing and strong vocal ability. Written for high Baritone/Tenor but please submit regardless if you feel the role is right for you. We are looking for strength of comedic acting first and foremost, we can make adjustments for vocal stylings.

Wendy: CAST

“Goose”: Early 20s to Mid 30s. Female. Any ethnicity. The actress who will be playing Goose in the musical version of Top Gun! If it ever gets off the ground…An actress struggling to connect with her part. We never learn her actual name. No one, not even the director, seems to realize that it’s important to help “Goose” properly portray a man. She feels out of her depth and confused and humour helps her survive the utter lack of creative direction during the rehearsal process. Must have great comedic timing and strong vocal ability. Must be able to move.  Written for alto, but please submit regardless if you feel the role is right for you. We are looking for strength of comedic acting first and foremost, we can make adjustments for vocal stylings.

“Iceman”: Early 20s to 40. Male. Any ethnicity. Again, the actor who will be playing Iceman in the musical version of Top Gun! We never learn his actual name. Super macho and a Type A leader in the scenes in the show-within-the-show but offstage is clever, sly, gay and a huge fan of sexual innuendo as he consistently and playfully hits on “Maverick”. Must have great comedic timing and strong vocal ability. Written for high Baritone/Tenor but please submit regardless if you feel the role is right for you. We are looking for strength of comedic acting first and foremost, we can make adjustments for vocal stylings.

“Charlie”: 30s – 40s to play 40. Female. Any ethnicity. The actress who will be playing Charlie in the musical version of Top Gun! We never learn her actual name. “Charlie” oozes sex appeal in the show-within-the-show but offstage she hides her desperation behind bravado. Used to being The Ingénue, she was adored and could get any man she wanted. Now, at forty, she has lost a bit of her luster. And she knows it. She works hard to keep herself looking sexy, feeling wanted and does what she needs to do to get what she wants. Must have great comedic timing and strong vocal ability. Written for mezzo with high mix to G but please submit regardless if you feel the role is right for you.  We are looking for strength of comedic acting first and foremost, we can make adjustments for vocal stylings.

The General: 40s-60s. Male. Any ethnicity. Ex-Special Forces and the producer of Top Gun! The Musical. Representing the Armed Forces and on a mission to create a musical to ramp up support in the military services, National Pride in America and show the world that “might is right”. He has no idea how a musical is supposed to run and hasn’t even secured proper rights to the show. He just loves America. Loves musicals. Loves the ladies. And loves being in charge. Must have great comedic timing and strong vocal ability. Baritone. We are looking for strength of comedic acting first and foremost, we can make adjustments for vocal stylings.
