The Hot Mikado

The Story:

Cultures glide and collide in this hilarious and ‘HOT’ updating of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Mikado’. Hot Mikado weaves a snappy and fun packed tale where despite life or death stakes, characters still find time to tap their toes and sing their troubles away. In a land where the outlandish laws sentence people to death for almost any indiscretion, jazz, the blues and gospel are spoken fluently. Find out what happens when the clean lines of traditional Japanese design and culture combine with the big band sights and sounds of popular American 1940’s song & dance!

The score uses much of Sullivan’s original music but is reorchestrated using popular 1940’s musical harmonies and arrangements with a wide range of styles, including jazz, hot gospel, blues, rock, swing, torch songs and musical theatre – an eclectic mix that helps inject the show with endless energy. Add in an exciting range of dance styles that include the Lindy Hop, tap-dancing, the jitterbug and other 1940s dances and it all makes for one hugely entertaining show.

What are we looking for?

Hot Mikado is a fun, fast paced, fabulous music (and sometimes farfetched) fable of a show! Played over two acts of around 50 minutes each with one interval, it’s a great ensemble piece providing lots of stage time for all involved. It also provides lots of wonderful opportunities for strong singers, dancers and character actors to all shine brightly in their fields. There are nine named character roles in the show made up of villains, heroes, lovers and friends – and everything in between! For this production we are also creating an onstage singing group, requiring four fabulous vocalists to front the onstage band. We are also on the lookout for around 8 fantastic dancers (4 male and 4 female) to form a designated dance troupe to help keep the energy sky high. With a company of around 20 players, there really is something for everyone in this show and it all adds up to one fun, high energy night of theatre.

Auditions:

All auditions are by appointment only, consisting of a singing audition ‘AND’ a separate dance audition. Singing audition slots will last approximately 5-7 minutes and dance auditions cover up to a 2hr period.

Auditions can be booked now by following the links on the CMS website:  www.chatswoodmusicals.org

Audition forms, Audition Music and Dialogue excerpts are all available to download via CMS website.

Complete the form in advance of your audition slot and bring it with you on your audition day. Please remember to attach a head shot to the front of the audition form.

All auditionees must be at least 16 years old on the day of auditions.

The audition panel will consist of the below for all initial auditions and call backs:

Director, Musical Director, Co- Choreographer and a non-voting CMS committee member.

Audition Dates/Times/Venues:

Singing Auditions:              Saturday 24th June between 3.00pm & 7.00pm.

Venue: Brand X, 60 Atchison St, St. Leonards

Dance Auditions:                Sunday 25th June between 10.00am & 1.00pm

Venue: Brand X, 60 Atchison St, St. Leonards

Call Backs (if needed):       Wednesday 28th June between 7.30pm & 10.00pm

Venue: Duck & Dive, 8-12 Lambs Road, Artarmon (Enter via Cleg Street)

How will I know I’ve been cast?

All auditionees will be contacted directly by phone or email by a member of the production team.

Contact will be made within 3 days following the completion of call backs (by the evening of Sat 1st July). The CMS website and Facebook page will also be updated with the casting results as quickly as possible.

Singing Auditions:

Auditionees should prepare approximately 1 ½ – 2 minutes of their own choice of song that they feel matches the style of the show and shows them off to their best. The Musical director will accompany all auditionees on the piano. Please bring clean readable sheet music that is correctly marked up and in the required key – preferably in a clear plastic page holders or binder. Backing tracks or a cappella singing is not appropriate. The singing auditions will be conducted in a closed panel format.

If you are auditioning for any of the nine named roles, you must ALSO prepare the pre-selected music excerpt from the show for those characters. Music is available to download from the CMS website. If auditioning for more than one named role, please note that the panel may choose NOT to hear all the set excerpts, but it is certainly in your own best interest to have them all prepared in advance.

A Note from the team: Many of the vocal lines in Hot Mikado were written specifically to suit the original performer’s range and strengths as a vocalist. If you wish to audition for a specific part that you feel does not fully match your range and vocal strength, we absolutely encourage you to make the song your own. Change a riff that goes too high, alter the rhythms or pitches, find creative fixes that make the piece your own. You will be in no way penalised for doing this in your auditions – we love originality!

Dance Auditions:

Whilst not all roles are specifically dance focused, all auditionees are required to attend a dance call so that the team can access current abilities. There are plenty of non ‘dancer’ roles in the show. If dancing is ‘not your thing’ please don’t be put off by this. Eagerness and willing to try are key – come have fun!

The dance audition is broken down in to two sections – a general chorus/character movement audition and a more technical ‘dancers’ audition. Anyone interested in any of the 9 named roles or the 4 onstage singers should attend the general movement audition (Sunday 25th June between 10.00am & 11.00am).  If interested in the dance troupe, please attend the latter call (Sunday 25th June between 11am & 1pm).

At the general movement audition we will set a short section of movement and a very short tap section. Chorus shoes & tap shoes required. If you do not have tap shoes – wear character or hard soled shoes.

At the ‘Dancers’ auditions we will be set a more complex/technical routine. We will also be looking at tap and pointe work in the latter stages of the audition, as there are some wonderful opportunities in the show for highlighting these dance styles – please bring appropriate footwear (chorus, tap & pointe shoes).

Dance notes for all auditionees : Please wear fitted dance clothing to show off body lines and form with long hair tied up away from the face – specifically no jeans or bare feet please!  Both auditions sessions will include a short warm up/stretching session at the start (all included in the set time frames).  There is nothing to prepare in advance. Auditions will be conducted in an open ‘group’ format in front of the audition panel. Change facilities are available at the venue. Please remember to hydrate – bring water!

Reading Auditions:

Short dialogue excerpts for some of the named character roles are NOW available to download via the CMS website. These will be heard during the singing auditions. If you are auditioning for more than one of the named role, please be aware that the audition panel may choose NOT to hear all the different excerpts but again, it is in your own best interests to have them prepared….to help you shine brightly!

Call Backs:

As the date of the call backs is relatively close to the audition dates, the set music selections for the call backs is also now available on the CMS website. It is entirely the auditionees choice to prepare this in advance of the calls backs as they may not be selected to attend and perform it. There will also be some previously unseen dialogue presented to the auditionees at the call backs and as such there is nothing to prepare in advance for this. The call backs will be conducted in an open format with the audition panel and all those called back.

Character Roles & Descriptions:

Please note – Hot Mikado is full of very fun plot twists and wacky turn ups, so in keeping with this spirit of

‘expect the unexpected’, the production team are open to casting roles as either male or female.

Unless otherwise noted all accents are American – feel free to play around with which region of America!

Mikado

The big “cat” of Japan. An ardent stickler for the law, and a ruler who finds humour in every situation even when it is unjust or absurd. Feared and loved by all in equal measure. Loves a good show and is quite the performer!

Playing Age: 30 to 50

Baritone; up to a high G

Some dance ability required. Tap experience is an advantage

(or at least a willingness to learn – biggest element required is showmanship!)

Nanki-Poo

The son of the Mikado. A fresh-faced “rock crooner”, but a sweet boy at heart. Runs away from home and the high court and pretends to be a wandering minstrel who plays the trumpet with lots of energy but little finesse.

He is completely, madly and deeply in love with Yum-Yum.

Playing Age: 20 to 30

Tenor; top note is a high B

Good general dance ability required.

Yum-Yum

The ward of Titipu’s Lord High Executioner and engaged to marry him. She loves Nanki-Poo as much as he loves her. She is honest, earnest and not afraid to stand up for herself – full of ‘Girl Power’!

Playing  Age: 18 to 25

Soprano; Low A- High F Sharp (opt. A flat)

Good general dance ability required.

Pitti-Sing

Yum-Yum’s older sister. Very matter-of-fact. She is highly protective of her sister, and isn’t afraid to stand up to Katisha to prove it!

Playing Age: 20 to 30

Mezzo Soprano range; Low E – High F (opt. A Flat)

Good general dance ability required.

Peep-Bo

Yum-Yum’s Younger Sister. Cynical and sarcastic. Has the most attitude of all three sisters. Whist highly confident, she is also bubbly, bright and full of fun.

Playing Age: 16 to 20

Alto range – Low B3 – High D

Good general dance ability required.

Pish-Tush

The “coolest” Gentleman of Japan. Thinks himself overly important when doing the Mikado’s bidding. Quite high-strung and rash – and that’s on a good day!

Playing Age: 20 to 30

Tenor up to a high B flat/B Falsetto

Good general dance ability required.

Pooh-Bah

Lord High’s “everything else.” Took over all the offices of State when everyone else quit. Clever, money-hungry and selfish – and very, very, VERY full of himself.

Ko-Ko’s right hand man.

Playing Age: 30 to 45

Bass Range Low A/up to E
Good general dance ability required.

Requires an actor with strong regional accents ability – multiple accents!

Happy to hear examples of various accents at auditions – bring it on and have fun!

Ko-ko

The Lord High Executioner! Was given his title the night before they were to be put to death for flirting. The truth is, they have never killed anything – ever! A softie underneath all the bravado.

Playing Age: 30 to 50

Baritone up to a high G

Good general dance ability required and superb ‘sellabilty’ of a song.

Ko-Ko provides much of the comedy in the show. A charismatic, engaging and high energy performer is required for this role with great physical comedy ability.

Katisha

Nanki-Poo’s spurned and subsequently angry suitor. An oversexed femme fatale. Confident, loud and always right…and ‘blessed’ with a plain face! Threatens to tell everyone of Nanki-Poo’s real identity to ruin his engagement to Yum-Yum. Though she is merciless, intimidating and a true musical theatre ‘diva’ – she does have a warm heart beating underneath it all – somewhere! A great fun villain role.

Playing Age: 30 to 45

Contralto- alto range – Low F/up to B4

Good general dance ability required.
