1. Casting Requirements

The cast of StageArt’s THE COLOR PURPLE, will consist of 15 singers and actors. The production requires a Musical Theatre style voice with distinctions of gospel, soul and/or blues. Cast should have basic dance ability and be confident in stage movement (if you have strong dance skills these will be utilised). No roles have been pre-cast in this production. The minimum age requirement to audition is 15. If you are under the age of 18 we need your parent or guardian to sign your consent to audition and your cast agreement, if successful.

There is no maximum age restriction, we encourage artists of all ages to attend. StageArt’s THE COLOR PURPLE requires a diverse cast who can believably portray the characters written in the show who are of African American descent. We strongly encourage artists from all non-caucasian backgrounds to put themselves forward for consideration for on stage roles, and artists of any background for off stage singing roles.

This production will run with a reduced cast, meaning all characters (with the exception of Celie, Nettie and Mister) will feature in the ensemble and all ensemble artists will have with featured roles.

The roles are not age specific. The actors must embody characters over a 40 year time span, so we encourage artists of all ages to put themselves forward. For reference, the minimum stage age is listed below.

CELIE – 20+ – Lead female
Drives the story; she is vulnerable, spirited, introverted, mischievous, seemingly passive but not. She has a deep and hard soul, she believes she is ugly. She has a sense of humour which is sometimes wicked. An observer with very telling eyes. She must emotionally age from 14 to 44 over the course of the show. The actor must have a strong, reliable belt singing voice with lots of soul.

NETTIE 20+ – Supporting female

Attractive, adventuresome, feisty, educated; she has a powerful bond with her sister Celie but is forced by Mister, (Celie’s husband) to leave Georgia and move to Africa.

A commanding actor with a belt singing voice is required. Emotionally ages from 12 to 42.

Mister 30+ – Lead male

Also known as Albert, Mister takes us on a 40 year journey as emotionally evolves from an aggressive and abusive farm owner to a soft and regretful gentleman. He should be strong, handsome and carry an obvious masculinity. The role requires brutal behaviour with a strong dominating presence. He is married to Celie and in love with Shug Avery, he is also the father of Harpo. Strong powerful tenor vocals accompanied by a commanding speaking voice.

Harpo/Ensemble 20+ – Supporting male
Mister’s vulnerable, confused and good hearted son who is generally lucky at life and always falls on his feet. We see Harpo age over 35 years in the show evolving from a slightly dumb and klutzy youth to a loving father and successful business owner. He marries Sofia and takes Squeak as his mistress. Harpo needs natural rhythm and a melodic singing style. The actor will feature in the ensemble and may also sing offstage.

Shug Avery/Ensemble 30+ – Supporting female
A star singer who we meet at deaths door and we see her evolve over a 20 year period. She is very comfortable with her sexuality, she is dynamic and powerful with an irresistible attraction to lovers and heartache. Shug needs a knockout Bessie Smith style vocal. This role may require partial or full nudity (this is at the discretion of the cast actor and is not a decisive factor in casting)
The actor will feature in the ensemble as a different character and may sing off stage.

SOFIA/ENSEMBLE 20+ – Supporting female

Powerful warrior woman, physically bigger but beautiful. She is comfortable being large and sexual – she knows how to use these attributes to her advantage. Great sense of humour and the actress must have excellent comic timing. The role requires and actor capable to emotionally age over 30 years.

SQUEAK/ENSEMBLE 16+ – Supporting female

An energetic and strong minded character who becomes Harpo’s mistress. Her presence is in an annoying manner, with a high pitched voice accompanied youthful energy and passion and self belief. The actor will feature in ensemble sections and may sing offstage.

DORIS/CHURCH SOLOIST/ENSEMBLE Any Age – Supporting female
