GTC is proud to present auditions for our 2019 musical: Rent by Jonathan Larson.
Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

Auditions will be held on Friday 24th of May from 6pm-10pm and Saturday 25th of May from 2pm-10pm.
Callbacks will be held on Sunday 26th of May from 2pm onwards.
Audition and callback venue is TBC.
Prepare two songs (you may not be asked to sing both) – One song in the style of the show and one song showing off range and ability
*Auditionees may sing one song from the show if they wish.
Please select a 90/120 second section of your songs.
No acapella or backing tracks
Sheet music must be in the correct key. Song MUST be clearly marked and in a folder. No loose sheets or poorly presented music will be accepted.
Please also prepare a monologue from an American play/musical in the style of the character you wish to audition for. You may email us if you need a suggestion of which to look at. Please limit these to 60 seconds.
Mark Cohen
Filmmaker and video artist. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, Mark is the typical young artist. He and Roger are roommates in the loft. A bit of a nerd.

Roger Davis
A struggling musician and former drug addict. He is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft and battles with being HIV-positive.

Angel Dumott Schunard
The eccentric HIV-positive street drummer. A drag queen with an incredible gift of dance and a magnetic personality. He becomes Collins’ lover.

Mimi Marquez
An HIV-positive stripper with drug addictions. Sexy but sickly, she conceals it all at her job in the local strip club. She lives in the same building as the loft.

Tom Collins
A computer genius and liberal professor. He is a nurturer with a smooth and relaxed disposition. Used to be a roommate in the loft and is HIV-positive.

Maureen Johnson
An unpredictably zany performance artist. Maureen oozes sexuality and used to live in the loft. She has recently dumped Mark for Joanne.

Joanne Jefferson
A public interest lawyer and headstrong lesbian. She is smart and purposeful in all her decisions. Carries on a tumultuous relationship with Maureen.

Benjamin Coffin III
The landlord of Mark and Roger’s apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth.

A group of 10-12 versatile performers to play various roles in the show.
First rehearsal will take place on the 29th May from 7-10pm.
Rehearsals will then be held on Wednesdays 7-10pm, Friday 7-10pm and Sunday 9am-2pm at Montrose public Hall.
*Please take note of travelling time to and from rehearsal and factor this into your decision to audition.
There will be a mandatory rehearsal camp on August 9th-11th in Phillip Island. This is compulsory for all cast member so please make sure if you plan to audition you have these dates free.
The show dates are October 10th-19th and we will be performing 8 shows. Our show venue is Knox Community Arts Centre.
All cast members are required to become financial members of the company and will also be required to pay a cast/rehearsal camp fee. GTC membership fee is $30, cast/camp fee is $70.
We will only be accepting auditionees over the age of 18 at the time of auditions.
