Fur the Love of Broadway

On Saturday 12 November, Save-A-Dog Scheme (SADS) will host a ‘pawesome’ concert of Broadway favourites to help raise money to continue to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs and cats.

SADS is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation that was started in 1985, at a time when the term ‘no kill’ was a foreign concept to most Australian animal shelters.

Founder and President Pam Weaver says “Save-A-Dog Scheme led the introduction of the ‘no kill’ movement in Australia. The concept basically means that we re-home every animal that’s able to be re- homed – unless it would be irresponsible for us to do so.”

SADS began life as a rescue group; with volunteers going to other shelters and pounds and finding foster homes for animals who would otherwise be put down. Then, in 1996, the organisation took over the contract to operate the Stonnington regional animal pound and began rescuing and re-homing cats. And today, the shelter extends its reach to regional Victoria, with volunteers driving out to country pounds to pick up dogs and cats that have not been claimed by their owners.

In 2015, 600 animals passed through the shelter’s doors and some animals require significant treatment such as surgery and hospitalisation so the costs can mount up.

The Save-A-Dog Scheme’s Fur the Love of Broadway concert will assist in raising funds to continue the daily operation of the shelter. “Because each dog and cat has to be desexed, vaccinated, wormed, micro chipped, vet checked and temperament assessed before being re-homed, it is much more expensive to save these animals than to euthanise them,” Ms Weaver said.

Fur the Love of Broadway will be held at Malvern Town Hall, 311 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, on Saturday 12 November 2016. There will be songs from Cats, My Fair Lady, Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls, Wicked, Me and My Girl, Matilda, Les Miserables and more.

This stunning benefit concert will feature 10 Melbourne performers including Jonathan Guthrie-Jones (Shake, Rattle and Roll Australia), Zak Brown, Tyler Hess, Peter Jenkins, Adrienne George, Laura Slavin, Melissa Harrington, Beryle Frees, Natasha Bassett and Tim Addicoat as the MC.

Guests can get dressed up to the nines, walk the paparazzi red carpet and enjoy an evening of sumptuous music! The red carpet starts at 7pm and the concert will begin at 8pm.

Tickets are $50 and includes a complimentary drink on arrival. Visit www.saveadog.org.au for more information, to make a donation or to book tickets. Tickets can also be booked at www.trybooking.com/NETS
