BABIRRA MUSIC THEATRE Inc.
We are excited to announce auditions for our October 2018 production of:
DUSTY – THE ORIGINAL POP DIVA
Before Adele. Before Gaga. Before Kylie, Cher and Madonna…
…There was Dusty.
Dusty – The Original Pop Diva is an Australian-written jukebox musical based on the life of the UK’s first lady of pop music, Dusty Springfield. It features a catalogue of the late singer’s classic hits and a book by John-Michael Howson, David Mitchell and Melvyn Morrow. Dusty Springfield was a pioneer of popular music and culture. With the arrival of television and the commercialisation of the music industry, the world had never before seen a star like her.
In the 1950s, a star-struck, tomboyish London schoolgirl fantasises she could become a glamorous pop icon. Although her family laugh-off her fantasies, nothing deters her. Blessed with an amazing voice and talent, young Mary O’Brien transforms herself into the iconic Dusty Springfield. But while Dusty is the image of perfection on the world stage, it is all a facade behind which, Mary O’Brien is trapped.
In the 1960s, Dusty took the entertainment world by storm with a score of hits, a top television show and a legion of fans. But the success she craved is unfulfilling and real happiness eludes her. Driven by her sense of perfection, and with her closest friends in tow, Dusty continues to search for her “sound”. Through her journey, she discovers a longing to be loved by a woman who could cause her career irreparable damage, and at the pinnacle of international success — with triumphs in Britain and America — Dusty finds the pressure unbearable.
Unable to be what the world expects, and finding the spotlight’s heat can burn, she retreats to a lonely place where her demons get the better of her. Eventually finding strength in adversity, Dusty returns to soar at the top.
BABIRRA Music Theatre, along with the production team of Dusty — The Original Pop Diva, are tremendously excited to bring this unique and seldom performed production to audiences this October. We are seeking a vibrant and versatile cast to join us as we pay tribute to one of the 20th Century’s brightest stars.
