Bad Jews

Bad Jews

by Joshua Harmon

Director: Tess Maurici Ryan

The night after their grandfather’s funeral, three cousins engage in a verbal (and somewhat physical) battle. In one corner is Daphna Feygenbaum, volatile, self-assured and unbending. In the other is her equally stubborn cousin Liam, a secular and entitled young man, who has his shiksa girlfriend, Melody, in tow.

Stuck in the middle is Liam’s brother, Jonah, who tries to stay out of the fray. When Liam, Jonah, and Daphna are left to determine who ends up with a precious family heirloom in the wake of their grandfather’s death, a vicious and hilarious brawl over family, faith and legacy ensues.

Exploring the ties that ultimately keep families knotted together, BAD JEWS is a biting comedy about family and faith that questions what you choose to believe, when you’re the chosen.

  • If you are offered a role, you must not have any holidays or work trips planned during the rehearsal period.
  • Rehearsals will be Monday & Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons.

DAPHNA FEYGENBAUM – 22, Liam & Jonah’s first cousin. 2/3 body, 1/3 hair. Thick, curly, frizzy, long brown hair. Passionate about Judaism. She’s very connected to her Jewish heritage. She’s highly opinionated and easily allows her defensiveness to turn into aggression towards her opponents. Subtlety is not in her nature. She’s argumentative. The actor must have the ability to approach the material with a sense of humour and wit and possess strong comedic timing.

LIAM HABER – 25, Daphna’s cousin: his mother is the sister of Daphna’s father. Wire-rim glasses. Attractive, put-together young professional on a trajectory for success. University of Chicago Asian Studies Ph.D student. Former Fulbright scholar in Japan. Has as much of a sense of humour as an overdue library book. Clearly lost his tolerance for Daphna a long time ago and isn’t discreet about the way he feels.

JONAH HABER – 21, Liam’s younger brother. Sometime University of Vermont sophomore (2nd year student). Just a regular guy, less lanky than his brother. Less brainy. More brawn. More heart. Sensitive. Doesn’t always speak up but when he does, it makes a strong impact. Caught in the middle.

MELODY – 24, Liam’s girlfriend. Short, stick-straight blonde hair. Mousy. All-American, sweet, tries hard. Works for a non-profit.
